Blood glucose was 161 this this morning. Haven't checked it in the evening. I forgot until I was eating dinner.

Had a doctor appointment today. I showed him my blood glucose readings over the past week which went from a Monday morning count of 240 to a Thursday morning count of 161. At that time I told him I'd gone back on the Adkins Diet starting Monday reminding him that the last time I took my blood glucose number from 325 down to 128. I told him the VA Clinic prescribed me insulin but I haven't taken it yet. I asked if I got my A1C down to 6.1 as I did before do I really need insulin. He replied "Yes".

I'm confused. When I asked him why he seemed to not want to answer. Too busy I guess. So I'm studying up on insulin. I thought it was to bring your blood glucose level down. I'll a million dollars if I have been taking the insulin this week and not made the lifestyle change to the new diet my number would not be nearly so low as it is now.

I'm going to continue my way until I get my glucose down to an A1C level of 5.0. Then I'll start adding carbs and in the manner suggested by Atkins i.e. almonds, blueberries, etc.

It's just that I fail to see the need for insulin if I'm bringing my number down that far by a change in diet. I'm not eating any sugar, bread, high carb vegetables, etc. My glucose is plummeting. I just checked it since it's been 4.5 hours since I ate and it's 155.

My next blood work is in 6 weeks. We'll see then where I stand.

As for other things. I actually ate breakfast and a light lunch and dinner today. Such is my goal to eat three meals and two or three snacks as suggested. It's hard for me coming from eating only one 5 hour meal after work. hahaha Funny how it's easier to walk away from sugar and bread than it is to force myself to eat small but all day long.

Back on the Atkins Diet after a long hiatus.
Last time I lost 35 lbs in 90 days, took my A1C number from 9.5 down to 6.1. All other numbers were better than before the diet.

This time my weight is back to what it was when I started the diet the first time at 260. My new A1C is 12.8. Donuts, cookies, brownies and pouring bags of sugar down my neck, (or so it seems).

Have never had health insurance so doctor visits were infrequent. Like once every 3 months. $80 a visit for my doctor to spend 5-7 minutes with me.

A month ago I was approved by the VA Clinic for health care. What a great place with great people. My doctor is a Nurse Practitioner who spent over a half hour with me at each of my 2 visits so far.

All my medications were tweaked by a Hospitalist outside the VA when I spent a 3 days as an in-patient. I had chest pain but everything checked out fine except that my electrolytes. They were out of balance but were set right during my stay. My heart is functioning normally, (other than having an EF of 35%), and my enzymes are good.

The VA Clinic has changed my statin medicine from Previstatin to Lipator. They also gave me a blood glucose meter and a target range for my number. In addition, they prescribed and provided me with insulin to inject every evening. I've had it a week but have not used it yet. I have a reason for that.

I stopped eating sugar, bread and other carbs not on the Atkins Induction Phase 1 list On Monday the 14th. Checking my blood glucose twice a day it has been 240-260, 242-230, 192... I'll check it later today hoping for and even lower reading. My average glucose number has been 321 so it's getting better here in the short run.

My goal is to get my glucose numbers down to the 130 range without insulin. That would put at an A1C around 6.2. I've done it before.

I think the problem, and the thing I don't like about the the medical profession as a whole, is they give you nutritional guidelines which included fast carbs and sugar and then prescribe you insulin to counteract the high blood sugar which results. My goal is stop eating sugar forever and follow the Akins guidelines completely.

At any rate, my challenge now is to eat 5 times a day which I'm not used to doing. Typically I eat nothing until dinnertime and then gorge until I hate myself. I didn't eat breakfast this morning unless you count about 4 oz. of cheese as a breakfast.
