I've been sick then coping with asthma. So it was a real treat for me to finally be able to hike again. We went on the Sparks Lake loop trail in central Oregon's Cascade Mountains.
I almost didn't go. The air quality in town was hazardous from Oregon's wildfires. But I agreed to drive to the trailhead, and the air was much better in the mountains. It was relaxing and beautiful and a great workout!

I've been sick with a bad cold/cough (asthma) during the past week. So I have not been hiking or exercising. Even though I am vaccinated, I saw a doctor and got a COVID test just to make sure I did not have one of the breakthrough cases. (I called and was prescreened and the COVID test was the clinic's recommendation). No COVID, but he adjusted my asthma medication.
I am gradually getting better, but the asthma flare up isn't much fun.
I made lots of healthy soups while I was sick. (Won ton soup, dal, chicken posole, and chicken cacciatore). I ran out of fresh vegetables and fruits, but it was an opportunity to use some of the items in my freezer.
All things considered I am grateful to have lost a pound.

Because I have gotten slower with arthritis, I don’t usually hike with groups anymore. But yesterday I went to Brennan Palisades ( in central Oregon’s Cascade Mountains) with the local geology group. The hike was more difficult than I expected; very steep cross country trek through rock and difficult terrain. As I feared, I was the slowest person in the group, but I did not leg far behind, and they were very nice and waited for me.
The views were spectacular, and the geologist shared lots of interesting information about the Palisades. We were in the middle of a collapsed caldera with rhyolite spires and pinnacles.
We carpooled with the leader of the hike, John. On the drive home, John felt very ill and dizzy, so he pulled over to let someone else drive. By the time we reach the small city of Prineville, it was obvious that he needed medical attention. We took him to the small community hospital, where the nurses brought a wheelchair and took him into the ER. After extensive testing, the diagnosis was heat exhaustion and dehydration. His wife was off hiking elsewhere, but we eventually were able to reach her and she came to stay with him at the hospital. He was treated with IVs and electrolytes. It was an important reminder to drink enough water, and go slow enough so you don’t overheat.

Enjoyed a hike to Duffy Lake, longer and harder than I had expected (about 8 miles). End destination was beautiful, and a great workout. We brought our bug spray, but we were truly grateful that a nice fellow hiker loaned us mosquito nets.
