Just when I though getting fit and living a healthy lifestyle was easy...

Went for a bicycle ride today in West Salem, OR. Mostly flat with some rollers. Not much shoulder, in fact none in some areas. Had a tractor-trailer rig blast me with his horn as he sped by. I turned a mile up the road, and there was the trucker pulled off to the side. I asked him if he had problems with cyclists and sharing the road. He promptly pulled our a 2 1/2 foot wrench from behind his seat and started coming towards me. I turned and got out of there as quicly as I could.

I had already been pushing a high heart rate on the ride, the adrenaline and additional speed pushed me several beats over my max (off the chart on my Digifit app). Called the police and hopefully they can ground this guy - if he is that unstable, he doesn't belong behind the wheel of a rig like that. Now I have to worry anytime I ride that route if I am going to have a run-in with him.

I wonder if they make bicycle-friendly holsters for Glocks...

Getting frustrated with the stall in my progress. Seems the 282 mark seems to keep pulling me back. Even though I KNOW I am taking in less calories than I burn, I gain the weight back - especially over the weekends (when I don't exercise). I know it is supposed to be calories in minus calories out, but I don't think that takes glycemic index into account. I wonder if certain foods (carbs?) are torpedoing my weight loss?

I'm also lifting weights and while I believe the norm is 2lbs muscle gain/month (for younger males), I wonder if I could be getting some faster due to it being "returning muscle"?

I just got a fitbit, and will be tracking calorie expenditure throughout the days. I use Digifit to track my workouts, and fitbit integrates well with digifit. I wish they both played nice with FatSecret so my food intake could be shared to those two apps.

Had a serious craving for a burger last week, and I gave in. II bought some extra lean ground beef and made my own. It was wonderful and killed my craving while keeping me away from a fast food disaster!

Well, I have been counting calories since February 6, 2013. I have been doing spin classes 3x week since January 18, 2013. A couple notes:

Initially, the spinning classes were hard. Due to my knees being somewhat compromised, I don't spin over about 100rpm, and I don't do standing climbs over about 60rpm. I opt for "seated climbs" or just use more resistance when I do the slower standing climbs.

While I a still sore a fair amount (a large portion of my workout is in the anaerobic zone), I still have good results, and typically warm-up 15 minutes before the class, and continue spinning 15-30 minutes after the class for a total of 75 - 90 minute spins. I have the time to do this right now (in "career transition"), my concern is finding the time/energy to maintain this pace once I am working again. My last job had a 3-hours roundtrip commute which didn't leave time/energy for workouts.

The diet itself is going well - not so much a diet as just counting calories and trying to keep a daily calorie deficit. If I burn 1,000 -1,500 calories in a day working out, I do NOT take in additional calories. I may adjust what I eat (more protein on strength training days).

I am looking forward to achieving my initial goal of 250lbs on June 11th, 2013. That will be the lightest I have been in nearly 19 years! My secondary goal is to be 225 by June 11th, 2014. That will be my lightest in over 25 years! If I hit my initial goal by June, and keep doing the spin classes 2-3x week, I plan to do a ride from my house to the coast here in Oregon. That will be about 50 miles 1-way, with significant climbs. I have always eyeballed that route and thought what an achievement it would be. If I do it this year, perhaps I can make this a yearly event.

That's y first journal entry in what I hope to be many as I continue on this journey. I have always been a "big guy", but I know I simply cannot keep carrying this weight any longer for a variety of reasons.
