As they say in my mother's native country: GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAL! Just over two years (two years and three weeks) after starting this journey, and after adjusting the target slightly a couple of times, I've hit my goal weight. 72.575 kg. 11 st 6 lbs. Body Mass Index 23. I started out at 380 lbs, (172.37 kg; 27 st 2 lbs, BMI of 54.5). I've lost just about 100 kilos.
Now begins the hard part, staying here for the rest of my life. My doctor recommends a maintenance diet of 1,700 calories a day. That actually seems like a lot to me, which tells me that my perspective has changed. Yesterday, after having fasted in the morning in order to have an X-Ray with barium meal on an empty stomach, eating 800 calories in the evening felt like a great deal. I'm determined not to go back to what I was.
A friend said on her Live Journal that diets don't work (she'd lost 100 lbs in three years. I disagreed with her, mostly over the meaning of "diet" (that is, a diet is simply what you eat as a normal practice not what you eat to lose weight. So saying "diets don't work" is rather like saying "breathing doesn't work". The right diet works, it worked for me, and it can work for anyone with the discipline; it's a matter of changing lifestyle. On that point she and I were in agreement.
Anyway, I feel like rejoicing. With a cup of caffeine-free, sugar-free tisane.

CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have absolutely no doubt that you will maintain this weight for the rest of your life. You have been doing 'this' for a while now and hopefully it will become second nature to you. Yes there will be fluctuations but if you catch yourself before it gets beyond 5-10 lb you can get right back on track. I admire you so much. You have done amazingly well. Again congrats and enjoy the new found freedom of being at your ideal weight!

Congratulations, Fledgist!! I say the same thing about "diet". A diet is what we eat, simply put. Weight loss "diet" is what we eat to lose weight. I prefer a healthy "diet" aka lifestyle change. As for maintenance, you'll do great. Again, congratulations on your success!
