Fledgist's Journal, 14 September 2011

I was astonished this morning because I wasn't expecting to pass the 190 lb mark quite yet. This is a big deal for a couple of reasons. First of all, when I started this process in March 2010 I weighed 380 lbs. I have now lost half that. I am not half the man I was in the most literal sense of the word. In under 18 months I have shed 13 stone 8 pounds to arrive at a weight of just under 13 st 8 lbs. I still have some distance to go, but the road behind me is now far, far longer than the road left.

The other reason is a more conventional one: according to the Halls.md web site, which I've been using to track my BMI, I'm now at the 50th percentile for my height and age group. Men in their fifties tend to be overweight. Not as obese as I was just a year and a half ago, but the average man carries 25 pounds or so too many, which is what I'm carrying right now. My BMI is 27.2. That's still too high, though much better than when my doctor was shaking her head at a BMI of 54.

I put in more than an hour at the gym yesterday, and walked for about 46 minutes between my office and the main campus and back on various errands as well. I was dog-tired at the end of the day. Now I've got a huge load of projects landing on my back all at the same time. I really am going to need as much gym time as I can carve out to preserve my sanity.
189.8 lb Lost so far: 147.2 lb.    Still to go: 21.8 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Wow - just WOW - that's totally awesome, about the weight loss. You have done and are doing incredible. Keep up the commitment to yourself with the gym, work will always be there - lol. Can't say how pleased I am for you. Its not often someone can say they are half the man they used to be, and be the better for it!

You've made wonderful progress. I'm sure you'll feel really healthy now. People should not assume that because you're older, it's normal to be fat.

Yvonne, when I started I could only hope. Now, I'm still hoping but I can see the next stage. A year and a half ago, I had no conception of what things would be like on the downslope. Now, I see the last hurdles as still to be overcome, but they are the last hurdles and not insuperable. What I am finding is that a lot of efforts are easier. Some are still hard, but I am building myself up. It's a constant struggle.

Fledgist, wow, I am amazed that you are already under 190 lbs! That truly is astonishing. There were days when I thought I would never be under 190 myself! I needed this visit to your journal for inspiration.
