AuntieJan's Journal, 27 March 2011

Up early this morning and off to the gym, then showered there and then on to service at Nomad (church). I never sleep in these days, get up at 6:30-6:45 most every morning. I do manage to catch a power nap on the weekend here and there.

Only a few months ago I was sleeping a lot more, I barely could get through the day without a nap even though I was going to bed at a normal time. Can we say barely functioning? I think we can.

I knew I needed to commit to a lifestyle change but I kept putting it off. Probably brought it up at least a half dozen times in session, and finally Erin said "well what are you waiting for?" I didn't have an answer, well not a reasonable one anyway. Fear of failure I suppose was on my mind. Again.

For you see I am what you can call a serial dieter, in fact I just did! I remember my first attempt to lose weight at about age 12. Not very much was known about proper foods and methods to use on a weight loss plan. No potatoes, bread, sweets, etc. was the thinking in the 60's and 70's, so I starved myself. I lost a few pounds but of course they came back and brought a few friends with them.

Well luckily I was becoming very involved with sports and throughout high school I maintained my weight and built muscle, which serves me well even today. But in my mind I was still fat, and in 11th grade I launched into another starvation diet and dropped to 130 lbs. Yes I lost about 20 pounds but my body suffered... my hair started falling out! I had really long blonde hair and a lot of it was in my hairbrush for a week or so. Thankfully it grew back.

Anyway my point to this entry is to reach out to anyone that thinks that starving themself is the answer to permanent weight loss and weight maintence because it ain't, sisters and brothers. I tried it many, many times, more than I can count.

What I am doing now is what your mother always told you to do... eat your veggies, back off the candy and junk food, and get some exercise. It's really a simple idea when you think about it, and no surgery is involved, just getting your mind in the right place.

We are armed with so much information about nutrition, health, and exercise that it can be overwhelming. Is it ok to have a beer or a glass of wine after work? Well it just depends on the day you tune in to the news, it's always changing. I just do what works for me, if it involves having that beer, then I compensate for it in other areas. Right now I have banned the suds but I will surely have one here and there down the road.

No more serial dieting for me... I know for sure that I am on a plan I will adhere to for the rest of my life, there is no stopping me now! I feel great and soon will be even better as I become more agile and fitting in to smaller clothes, something I am really looking forward to!

It's been a good day. Peace and God's blessings to you.

Love your outlook Jan, there is nothing holding you back now. I am on the measurements bandwagon....if you haven't measured yet, be sure you do, take some pictures and repeat the first of the month going forward. Amazing what a story book you will have!

Thanks Babs! BTW my sister's name is Barbara, she gets called Babs from time to time. Yes I have taken all my measurements and also photos... I am a graphic artist so I'll be having a little fun with those images. I am so glad I decided to start sharing my journals, it helps me and hopefully helps others. When I first signed up for FS in 2009 I wasn't really in the fight yet, but even so I managed to shed almost 20 pounds between then and now just by cutting back on alcohol and getting a little exercise. I am experiencing a much steadier loss now, and I am good to go for now and the near future. A few months from now I will change it up. Onward! Have a great day Babs!
