SaintViper's Journal, 22 January 2013

I've been reading Fat Chance by Robert Lustig (he's the Bitter Truth about Sugar guy) and am almost done with it. So far I really like it. It's not about how to loose weight, but rather, how to eat healthy and be healthy. I've read other books by people that cite studies and other stuff and they are ok, but this guy is a doctor and knows what he's talking about first hand. It makes a lot of sense.

His recommendations boil down to three things. Don't eat foods with added sugar (fruit is fine), eat lots of fiber, and exercise. All stuff we already probably know (though the degree to which sugar is bad for us might come as a surprise) but the way he explains it really made the light go on.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the book is that it's not a diet book. His premise is that our bodies really work against us in loosing weight and if you can't do it, that's fine. It's possible to be healthy and overweight as long as you do the right things and take care of yourself. I don't think I've heard that anywhere before. I still plan on loosing weight, but if that doesn't work out, if this can make me healthy at this weight, I'd be pretty happy with that too.

I'm going to give some of this stuff a try. I mentioned a little bit of it to High Command just to gently nudge her in that direction and she totally jumped on board saying we need to make a change including the kids. I'm really looking forward to giving this a try.
