TXSnowman's Journal, 26 January 2014

What a positively lovely day. Woke at 5, got the coffee going and got the guest room organized and made-up for my son, who will be here next Saturday (coincidentally in time for the Super Bowl..lol) . He'll be staying for 10 days and working in the office with me every day, so we'll get to spend a great deal of time together.

After finishing with the guest room, I installed some lights and a switch for them in our new out-building. Its the furthest from the house and I just never got around to wiring it after we got it built. Since I'm out there in the dark often, it's nice to have lights now.

Finished that about sunrise, had a wonderful bacon & cheese omelet before strapping on 60lbs of weight and taking the dogs out for a 7 1/4 mile hike. The weather was very Spring-like with sunny skies and temps in the 50's. A very pleasant way to burn over 1,000 calories!

Following the hike, it was off to the office for 5 hours of clients. All productive time and great people. Really nice afternoon.

Back at home, it was time for my weekly weigh-in. As expected, the weight is up, though not as much as expected, and it is totally water. The weight went up to 195.8 (which is still 139 lbs below where I began on May 29th). However, my body fat percentage now stands at 15.1% and my water is at 63.1%. When I weighed about 335 lbs, I set an arbitrary goal for myself of 180lbs based on nothing but the fact that it sounded reasonable. Reviewing all of the stats in my spreadsheet, I find that in order to reach my true goal of being under 15% body fat, my true weight should be about 190lbs. So I'm going to make that my goal until the end of February. Then, I'll probably decide where to set my next goal (maybe 12 or 13% bf). I'm kind of waiting to see how Bill and Keld do on the IIFYM experiment. If they are successful, I may have to try that to see if it will help me build some upper body mass, while getting leaner. Anyway, I'm extraordinarily pleased to be right at the 15% body fat mark. Not to be too vain, but I really do like myself a lot more than I have in a very long time. I like the way my shadow looks when I'm out walking. I like my profile in the mirror. I like the compliments I get from my family, my friends & my clients. I have an extra spring in my step these days and I feel that I have this weight & health thing under control for the first time in my life. Thanks to all you FS folks for all your support, ideas, & information. Have a great week!

I'm going to keep with the Doctor's recommendation to reduce the water pills or eliminate them completely and let the water weight stay high. It was probably artificially low, due to the torsemide anyway. Having made that decision

Thanks M2B. It amazes me too. I used to be so lethargic. Since I got my thyroid hormones straightened out and lost all this weight, I feel 30 years younger! Just finished 30 min of yoga, now I just need to do my core workout & I get to have some yogurt, chia & cinnamon for desert before I hit the hay.

You bet. I've upped my calories to around 1,500 and I feel, as you say, like I'm cheating on my "diet". I feel very full and I just keep having to find more to eat to reach the goals. However, I'm becoming convinced that at the point we've reached, continuing with extremely low calorie counts will be counterproductive. When we were huge, we had fantastic amounts of energy stores to draw upon to exercise and maintain muscle. However, at 15 - 16% body fat or less, while there are fat stores to draw on, they aren't sufficient to maintain the level of activity we are trying to keep up. Every single calculator, model & expert I can find says that, at this point, its time to up the calories to build and maintain muscle, increase health & well being, & not tear down the gains we've achieved to date. The secret, as you know will be taking in the correct foods and supplements. Adding empty calories will do us no good. So its a matter of following the guidelines you set up for yourself to maintain a healthy balance of your macro-nutrients. I will say this, in closing. I've tried to keep a variety of micro-nutrients and phytonutrients in my diet during my VLCD days. However, when you are strictly eating less than 900 or 1,000 calories per day, many foods just don't make the cut. As I'm increasing my calorie counts, I'm going to be trying to expand the list of nutritious foods that I may have limited or avoided completely thus far. I've already added in more nuts, fresh fruits and avocados. Good Luck with the IIFYM. I'm really hoping that its a huge success!

what about your diuretic ? have you checked with your doctor and adjusted the dosage . I wanted to know how it helps in weight loss

Namramn1, I did call the doc. She directed me to take a 1/2 of the diuretic pill and none of the potassium. Being off the diuretic definitely raised my overall weight. I gained 9.31 lbs of water in a week. However, during the same time, I lost 1.09 lbs of fat. So while I'm up about 8 lbs, I'm not concerned. As long as my fat pounds are going down, I'm moving in the right direction. My body fat percentage goes down even faster when my fat pounds drop and/or my muscle or water pounds increase. I've also been taking a creatine supplement on weight lifting days (M-W-F), which probably adds to the water weight issue to some degree. So, anyhow, I'm going to go to the 1/2 pill for now and try to wean myself off of them completely over time. I have to wonder if I've just been under-hydrated for some time while on the diuretic. My body water percentage was down around 50% which is right at the bottom of normal. Now that I'm off the torsemide, its up to about 62% which is a bit higher than average, but certainly not unhealthy. Perhaps, this is just one of those things that my body will just have to adjust to over time.

Enjoy your son's visit..That fluid can play havoc on your weight...But at least you know why you gained...How many doggies do you have???...

BHA, Thanks. I have two dogs. One is a four year old Field-Bred English Springer Spaniel, and the other is a one year old brindle deer-head Chihuahua. They both love walking and hiking. Surprisingly, the little four and a half pound Chihuahua can run with us for 8 to 10 miles and still be ready to play when we get home. However, she does sleep well at night and when I'm working in my office at home, she'll climb up into my bed and crawl under the covers for a good long nap...lol
