Rowanfair's Journal, 07 July 2010

I would have posted this yesterday if Fatsecret hadn't been down.

Funny how challenges come when you least expect them. A co-worker brought me some Chinese preserved plums with licorice as a thank you for some work I did for him. These plums are *really* hard to find in the US. I REALLY love them. These are usually a once-a-year treat when a different co-worker's family sends them from China for Chinese New Year.

But (a) they are plums and (b) they have sugar added. I have no idea how many carbs because Chinese labeling laws are different. The package says:

Chan Pui Mui (Preserved Plum)
Plum (85%)
orange peel (6%)
sugar (5%)
licorice (3%)
salt (1%)

14oz of them are sitting on my desk calling to me. 14oz all to myself instead of one or two the other co-worker would share because he knows I love them. QQ

/me resorts to googling "Chan Pui Mui nutrition"

Hmm. Asianfoodgrocer.com thinks 26g of carbs for 7 pieces. Or about 4g each. The Asian grocer picture is even the exact same bag. Hmm. If I plan ahead I could do one. But would it start up carb cravings? That is the question. What is the mechanism that causes crab cravings anyway?

Rowanfair, I guess I missed you making it to onederland. Congratulations! That is absolutely wonderful. Well, if I am doing the math correctly (I'm not known to be a math whiz so bear with me), if the 14oz has 26g of carbs (7 pieces). That computes to 4g per piece. If sugar is 5% then each piece should contain roughly .2g sugar? Did I do that correctly? Not sure how much sugar (natural) plums have or the licorice. While these might not be ideal, I don't feel these will be a deal breaker for you. But depending on how sensitive you are to the sugars (natural or not) it may cause sugar cravings. But in the end, it all depends on how you react.

I think you would be able to work one into your day without a big problem. Consider this a replacement for fruit as lots of people can have small servings of fruit. If you try it once and you get some cravings at least you know your limits. For long term sticking to this way of eating you will need to know you can add small treats now and again. Enjoy.

Thanks, Keli, I'm happy to be in Onderland. *grin* Thanks to you both. I'm thinking I'll try one for "dessert" after a meal and see how it goes. *laugh* I wish there were only 7 in 14oz, this is a big bag with lots of pieces (I took it home so I can't say how many servings per bag). But since they are preserved hopefully they can be saved and doled out for special occasions.

Have one and keep the rest for another time, and enjoy them!
