I haven't been very strict lately. We've had a lot going on and I let my healthy habits slide. I am, however, maintaining my weight. We picked my stepson up from the airport yesterday. His mother and his grandmother, who they lived with for the last year, let him eat whatever he wants and he spends way too much time on the computer or video games. He is 7 years old, 49" tall, and 87 lbs. I'm sick about it. When he left us at the end of last summer, he was 47" tall and 54 lbs. He has a stocky and muscular frame like his father, but this is beyond reason. I worry that he is going to have a lot of serious health problems because he always loses weight with us over the summer and gains twice as much back with her EVERY year. We started this morning with eggs, apple/oj straight from the Jack LaLane juicer (eternal thanks to a co-worker) and some homemade banana bread. We're going to spend the next 2 days at Kalahari Waterpark where my hubby and I work. I just got a new pair of tennis shoes so I'm hoping that this summer will instill some healthy habits that he'll carry for at least part of his time back with his mother. If you are the praying sort, please remember us!

Hi Kitty, I feel for you so much. I struggle with my weight but do try to keep healthy habits...I am not placing blame but my hubby is a bad influence. His habits have rubbed off on me and to my dismay my two boys :(. My nine year old is probably about 54" tall, but weighs 145lbs! and the little one is 6 about 48" tall and 110 lbs! I almost keeled over at their last physical. It just makes me ill to think that they have trouble keeping up with other kids or playing sports because they are overweight...or the trouble they will have with their health if they continue this way. I am working with them and we have talked about it. Our problem is also junk food and video games. I hope to break the video game cycle by teaching my boys that there are a lot of other fun things to do (yesterday they had a blast playing soccer at the park). I guess the best thing is to lead by example and do the best you can to instill the healthy habits... I was pretty honest with my older son about being overweight, the health effects and the differences between junk food and healthy food. I try to remind him when he is choosing to eat, to make a healthy choice but I let the choice be his (for the most part ;)). I wish you and your family the best! I hope you enjoy your summer!

Thanks Christine! That is pretty much what I'm trying to do too. I'm also trying to be very mater-of-fact about it and not make it seem like it is his fault at all - my ex husband was very critical and I gained a lot of weight because of him so I understand the psychological implications of nagging and guilt. And - this is horrible - his mother and his grandmother call him "fat" as a joke, but they are the ones feeding him!?!?!
