Good Morning FS Warriors! Beginning day 3 of this weeks fast, it's pouring outside so no walk, I had a little time on my hands. Yesterday marked the 30th day that I have been tracking my nutrition in Cronometer. With 30 days of data to look at, I decided to see just how close my BMR actually is compared to what I have lost to date. So, I pulled all of my exercise out of Cronometer and left only my BMR+moderately active which equals 2,651 calories burned with only my usual daily activities. So, I went in and added up my entire net deficit for the 30 day period. That equaled out to -43,796 then when you divide that total by 3,500 which are the calories in a pound of fat, you get an estimated net loss of 12.5 pounds. My net loss for that 30 days was 14.8 pounds, so it seems that it's pretty close to actual considering that it's not a medically tested BMR rate.

FS calculates my BMR + Sedentary at 2816, so if I add in anything like sitting or standing it kicks me up to 3239 calories burned per day, so doing the same thing for the same 30 day period in FS gives me a deficit of -84,854 divided by 3500 equals 24.4 lbs lost, which is wildly inaccurate, so I went back and removed all exercise for the same 30 day period in FS and came up with a deficit of -57,243 divided by 3500 = 16.35 lbs estimated weight loss.

So sitting on my ass and doing nothing but sleep and rest, I should have lost 16.35 pounds according to FS, while being moderately active with exercise at least 3x per week and an active job, I should have lost 12.5 lbs on Cronometer and my actual loss was 14.8...somewhere in the middle.....things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmm

Just comparing numbers for shits and giggles, but those of you who use your calories burned deficit to allow yourself to eat a little more, be careful, FS makes it look more generous than it actually is.

Good morning, Deb! YEP! My FS maintenance calories for sedimentary is 2200. My body composition scale gives me a BMR of around 1600. I recently got a Galaxy watch for my bday, and according to it, the scale is more accurate. I only reach 2200 or more calories burned during strength training days, according to my watch.

I need to upgrade my phone and my watch, both are cheap knockoffs...I think the watch cost me like 28 bucks on Amazon and it has it's own app and the only thing it sends to google fit is my heart rate and steps that send my heart rate above 90 bpm. It calculates my steps, but does not record them in Google fit, nor does it share my sleep, so I stopped using it in FS. I am a cheap-ass when it comes to gadgets and shoes! But, I have not used anything but FS in the past to track my food and exercise so it's kind of eye opening to see the differences, I'm also seeing a big difference in calorie amounts, protein, fat and carb differences between the food entries. So my Sunday intake totaled 1718 calories, with 200g protein, 70g fat, 47.5 carbs, Same exact foods and amounts in FS totaled 1527 calories, 177.5g protein, 63.51g fat, 33.84g carbs......that is a significant difference in my opinion. But, between the two I am at least aware of the discrepancies and not placing my faith in accurate info on just one app.

Debra I understand the difference is because FS members can not only add food items in the database but they can also modify the data on existing items. Other apps gather their data from sources which is referenced in that far right column as “Data source”. Members can submit food items to be added but they are verified before publishing.

LOLOL and the math is incorrect in both apps, if you take the grams of each and multiply it by 9 for fat, 4 for protein and 4 for carbs, it comes out a different number also....so it's still a bit of a guessing game!

Yes it’s rocket science !

Thank you for the analysis, Debra. This helps!

Honeebuns, I'm thinking that they may do a wee bit of rounding behind the scenes, so we are going to split the difference and call it a ball-park figure. I have a tendency to break out the adding machine when a math puzzle is in front of me, but knowledge is power! I'm going to leave the exercise entries out of the equation on both apps, I changed mine in FS from Sedentary to Active just so I can see what the difference is between the two equal BMR settings and I am going to just see what the numbers are like in the next 30 days. I'm just so happy to be learning new stuff!!! When I am analyzing food intake....actually doing food intake never crosses my mind!! LMAO how's that for focus!

I agree about fatsecret.

Debra that sounds great !! I also think some of the “math” is/ can be off because most foods have a moisture content which is impossible to calculate. In my journey I have paid more attention to “what I eat “ and not as much to “ how many calories do I eat “. By chasing the nutritional content beyond macros for me the satiety came easily and effortlessly. There are very few foods I actually weigh on my old analog type scale. Mostly just animal proteins. Olive oil I do use a measuring spoon. Otherwise I am all about estimating cups, tablespoons serving sizes. When you start looking at foods differently the journey becomes so much easier.

Ps having retired from a career in finance, accounting, tax accounting, gross margin, profit and cost analysis which all required exact reporting when it comes to this I am kind of a loose cannon and have learned to trust myself. But I do log on that other app but it’s a lot of guesstimating and some measuring as I explained in my last comment.

Mine are actually guesstimates also, except when it comes to the carbs, mainly because for like cooked brocolli for instance, I will spoon an amount onto my plate, then I will scrape it off into a measuring cup, it's always around half a cup. So I have started measuring it then putting it on my plate or I will come out short. The portions of meat I weigh raw then split it into two portions after it's cooked, of course the protein and fat ratio won't be precise in any animal protein, because like us, each animal is different, some are fatter than others....I eat my steaks medium rare, so there is more water present in it, than if it were well done. The fat also does not cook out of it, so you are actually consuming more fat at the same time. I spent 20 years doing payroll, accounts payable and receivable, so I have a tendency to over-analyse numbers on everything, trained to spot discrepancies.....so, looking for them is a habit 😁

The reason I was looking at the BMR is because I was concerned that perhaps I had lowered my metabolic rate with my macro and micro deficiencies. The within two pounds of expected weight loss tells me that either the damage I did was minimal or my effort to eliminate the deficiencies also repaired my metabolism. I have no idea how quickly you see results from repairing nutrition intake, but I am feeling better overall, the funny thing is, I did not realize I was feeling bad, until I improved, it was a very subtle difference. Doc says I am healthy, maybe poor-nutrition is easier to overcome in a basically healthy individual. I do have a lot of fat stores, I'm sure there are vitamins and minerals stored there too that are released when burning fat, but that still leaves the water soluble vitamins and minerals that get washed away during fasting that do need to be replenished when you refeed. So this is helping me balance my eating days into a more renewing and healing direction.

That's a pretty big difference! I used a calorie counting app called keto a few times, and there was a big difference there too. They had the Galaxy 4 on sale at Walmart a few weeks ago for $99. That's what I got. I've never had a $100 watch, but it is WELL worth it! It does SO MUCH!

I find myself doing similar math but have found it is unproductive and frustrating. I now focus more on body fat, mental clarity and body composition. As my body composition changes, lossing fat and gaining muscle, my weight and BMI really does not change much. I can see the difference and feel it. I feel more alert, have better focus, less anxiety, and more energy/stamina. I have really tried to not allow myself to get discouraged by what the scale says. My weight can change too much day to day.

Beware of that shits & giggles thing; as my grandpappy used to say, "It's all shits & giggles until someone giggles and shits!"

LMAO@Jim!!! We call it down the rabbit hole, but it's how I learn things. I am learning the nutritional value of foods and how they use synergy to create the processes in our bodies. All I have ever looked at is how many calories, how much fat, how much protein. I never learned how lack of one nutrient, or too much of one nutrient can affect the function and performance of another. Our bodies are amazing biological machines built to withstand a lot of abuse. Like any machine, it requires the proper fuel to function optimally. I'm learning, so down the rabbit hole we go!

Zen, I wish I did not have this deep seated hatred for Walmart, but I do and I will not set foot inside their stores and I will not browse their on-line offerings. That's a great price for a galaxy phone, but I won't buy one from them! (Dismounting soapbox quickly!!)
