Good Morning FS Warriors! I wanted to share one thing I have changed in my diet this time around. For the first 20 years of my life, I was a big coca-cola drinker and I had sweet tea, sweet coffee, drank orange juice daily. Then my Mom AND my grand-pa were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I immediately switched to artificial sweeteners in all things as I was told it was hereditary and having two diabetics in my maternal line increased my chances of having it myself. For the last 38 years I have used saccharin, splenda, equal, stevia and had what-ever they put in sugar-free drinks and snacks, I quit fruit juice completely. Even back in 2014-2016 when I lost over 100 lbs here on FS, I kept up my zero cal sweetners, I never lost the craving for sweets. This time, the first week of June, I stopped using any sweetner what-so-ever. It took about 2 weeks for me to get used to things unsweetened, like tea and coffee. Now, I'm not craving anything sweet. Whole fruit that I eat tastes like ambrosia where before it never seemed sweet enough. My hubby got some eclairs at the grocery Saturday when we went shopping, he ate them last night....me, nothing. I looked at them and I did not have any urge to join him in his sugar feast. That is amazing! I have some sugar free peanut butter in the pantry, the week before the 7 day fast I decided I wanted a bite of peanut butter so I grabbed a spoon and dipped some. I licked it and it was so overpoweringly sweet that I scraped it off into the garbage can and threw away the jar. It tasted terrible! I have watched videos and read studies where they say/show that artificial sweeteners have a huge impact on our taste buds because they are up to 200% sweeter than sugar, my response was....nah, they don't know what they are talking about....but they do! It's real and I am shocked at how different everything tastes to me now that my palate has been cleared of the fake sugar stuff. Those of you who are constantly battling the sugar monster and are using artificial sweeteners, to create sug-a-like snacks, you are feeding the sugar monster still. When you quit feeding it, it tucks it's tail and leaves!

Nice post, Debra, I've been weaning off the stuff too. To get my husband off real sugar, I introduced him to stevia and now he brings home Zevia sodas, which is my lingering habit, but I 'm cutting down. Your words are encouraging. I had the same experience with unsweetened peanut butter; it tasted like candy. We keep it to give to the dogs with meds.

Erika, be careful of the unsweetened peanut butter, some of it is sweetened with xylitol which can be fatal to dogs. I have a neighbor who chews sugar-free gum and he has a nasty habit of spitting it out on the ground. He lost his french bulldog because the dog ate the gum and I guess it builds up in the system and it poisoned the dog. When gum chewers come to my house I make sure they understand that used gum must go into the trash bin!!

I'm reading labels on peanut butter now and when I find one that is just peanuts and salt, well I might try it. It's another one of those pesky seed and nut oils though.

I did a similar experiment on my Hubby. Not too proud of this because it was sneaky but it also kind of helps make my point about what we get used to. I make a gallon of sweet tea every couple of days...just for him. I used 1 cup of sugar per gallon as per his Mother's instructions to me on how to take care of her son! LOL, So I have done that for years. A few months back, we were low on sugar and I only had 3/4's of a cup so I put it in there, said nothing to him about it and told him to pick up some sugar while he was in town. He never noticed, just drank it without complaint. So, a month or so later I decided to reduce it down to half a cup. He poured a glass and said, this is a little bitter. I said, I probably let it steep too long, he shrugged and chugged it down and went back out. Next time I made it I reduced the amount of tea by one teabag and added 1/2 cup sugar. He never noticed. I have been doing it every since, the other day when we went after the bicycle and then stopped at Shoney's for lunch, he ordered sweet tea. When he drank it he said WhhoooWe, they stumped their toe on the sugar this time, man that is sweet. I said nothing, I dumped part of my unsweet tea into his glass and got a refill, he sipped and said, ahhhh much better. LOL I have never told him that I weaned his sweet tea lower on sugar.

I limit my sugar and artificial sweeteners too.

Morticia, it is the one major change between what I did back in 20014-2016 and now. It's the first time I stopped using any type of sweetener, it's a real eye opener!

I still have a diet soda every now and then, but after you put them down for a while, it gets easier to opt for water.

congratulations I am so proud of you. I don't eat sweets most of the time but right before ovulation I seem to eat a Reece cup and it's so sweet and I used to hate water but on my health journey this time I cut out soda except for the one a day which is really sweet and sugary when I do drink it and starting tomm I'm gonna try to cut it out completely and just keep drinking alot of water. now fruit I love and need to work on that myself.

You are doing so great Sara! I have found a new appreciation for fruits with my new taste buds. I have been tossing fruit out in the past because it seemed to be tasteless and not sweet, I had no idea it was just my taste buds and not the fruit. Whole fruit with the fiber intact is good in small amounts. Now they taste sweet and juicy and it does not take much of them for my body to tell me....that's enough and I don't get get triggered to go consume everything in the refrigerator from them. I love making peace with my food. Seems it's the fake stuff that we are not designed to eat that causes most of our issues.

Yes!!!! I wish that everyone knew what you now know. Sugar is an addiction. There are more sugar addicts than drug addicts in this world.

I said in my bio i think it was that i was addicted to sugar and fats and that is the truest statement. I also lost around 12 years ago a good percentage of my taste buds as well as my ability to smell most things unless they are noxious (think boiled eggs, sulfurous things). With that i could consume huge sugary amounts of chocolate, ice cream etc and really only get a hint of the sweet taste. But that didnt stop me from consuming. Which tells me there is a psychological component as well. Great post Debra! (In all honesty tho i do still think about ice cream, really good cookies and so on but im not fixated currently)

I want to transition to unsweetened tea as well. Not sure if I can pull it off just yet lol. I want to have an alternative other than just drinking water and protein shakes all the time. Thanks for sharing your story.

they've actually found that artificial sweeteners are more addicting than regular sugar. research has also shown that artificial sweeteners can increase your risk of weight gain and obesity more than regular sugar. it's marketed as a healthy alternative, but it's just a big money making scam!

Wow!!! Thanks for sharing this info, I'm trying hard to work on the sugar cravings so I use stevia and sugar free gum, now I have to train myself to stop completely, at least i don't put sugar in my tea I have mastered that. oh my goodness I'm definitely gonna need prayers and will power. Thanks again!!!
