For those curious about Mounjaro...
Mounjaro or similar will not be for everyone. It is expensive...I had no idea my insurance would cover it until I picked it up from the pharmacy. I really struggled with feeling like it was a "crutch" or that I was somehow cheating the system or taking meds from diabetics who needed it.

As I thought more about it, talked to friends, etc I realized I have an illness, too. I have PCOS, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and an autoimmune disease.... all of which has led to obesity which is a disease in itself. I've had high cholesterol since I was a skinny teenager (thank you genetics) and have developed hypertension. I am no less worthy of treatment than someone who is already diabetic. Because let's be honest... I'm heading down that road.

This is not about being skinny because I've always tried to be very body positive. My husband has loved me for 30 years, skinny, fat, and in between! Still can't keep his hands off me. My kids tell me I'm beautiful all the time because they see past that. I have friends of all sizes who couldn't care less how I look. It's about addressing my overall health which has taken a turn in the last few years.

I am a nurse in Appalachia. I see everyday the dangers of ignoring health issues until you can't. I am making changes in addition to taking Mounjaro unlike most of the people using it for vanity reasons. I'm working on cleaning up my diet, and will incorporate exercise once I've got a few more pounds off as the pain is still too much to do anything sustained. The Mounjaro is just another tool which makes it possible for me to maintain the good habits. It takes away my hunger and cravings in a way I've never experienced. Even my other addictive and compulsive behaviors are under control like binge drinking, shopping, and finger picking. I do believe we may see this drug used for addiction in the future.

All of that to say, it may not be for everyone. I don't think it's a great solution for those who only need to lose a few pounds because most people gain back when they stop it. I fully expect to take this (or something similar) the rest of my life... just like a diabetic would. Obesity is a disease and the evidence suggests Mounjaro is an effective treatment. Worth a try for someone who had given up on ever losing weight. I have hope of regaining my health and that is worth everything to me.
