I've been writing to an English "pen pal" (now a good friend) since 1966, at age 12. We met for the first time during my first visit to England in 1978. I was introduced to shepherd's pie at a 16th century inn in a little village in Norfolk, England, and I loved it! (Who says English food is awful?! But ... Haggis? Wouldn't try it on a bet. It *is* Scottish, though!)

My "pen pal" didn't come to the U.S. until 1997, our next visit, but we're as close as girls who grew up next door to each other. In the meantime, we were raising families and working. We resolved, then, to trade trips across the pond every three years. In 2013, we "did" Madrid and Andalusian Spain, and in 2016, it was Philadelphia and Quebec City. This year, I'm due to visit her in London again (my fourth)... A treasure!
