Fritzy 22's Journal, 27 June 2024

A couple of things going on. First, my eating is really bad. I haven't stepped on the scale for over a month and guess my weight is 5 to 7 pounds higher. I want to try to stop whatever gaining I'm doing. Until I sell my house or take it off the market, the eating likely won't get much better. I currently pick up most lunches. But I can work on the snacking which has been out of control. Having a new Costco that is so easy to get to, close by and not crowded is fun for me, but dangerous. I am so focused on prices that it is hard to resist bargains. Yesterday I decided to go around 11am and get gas and a hot dog for lunch. That hot dog ended up costing me over $50! Bought cat litter and hair conditioner but also snacks. When I got home, I ate some of all the snacks. I now have in my house 4 huge packages of sweet and salty snacks. I will admit to buy a bag of Ruffles cheddar and sour cream potato chips, my latest obsession. The price was so good, but like everything at Costco, the package is HUGE! Probably 3 to 4 times the size of the party or family size bag. So this morning I woke up determined that each day I will have no more than one of the snacks, and hopefully, just one serving. So today I am trying to achieve that. One of my goals has always been to be able to have snacks in the house, but to leave them alone unless really craving something or to just have a small portion. Before I retired I took a lunch to work and usually brought one pecan sandie for a snack and it satisfied me. That all changed after retirement! So hopefully I'll get through the day as planned. But it's just after 9am! And that goal of having treats in the house is really for once I reach a maintenance weight

I am also trying to figure out what to do about my house. I'm getting more showings, 2-4 a week, but it's so hot that it is miserable for me and Bobby to get in the car and usually just drive around for an hour. Last month it wasn't hot yet, so I would take him to the park or trail to walk. My many, many years as a mortgage underwriter, loan officer and even a real estate agent taught me that homes will sell if they are priced right. And home prices seem to be diving where I live, but not where I want to move. A house about 5 doors away from me was for sale for over 6 months. They had it appraised at $650k and listed at $599k with no offers at all. They took it off the market for a month or so and now have it listed with the top agent in my neighborhood at $525k. I'm watching to see what happens there and am trying how much lower I could go with the price on my house and still be able to buy the house I want in Oregon. I've also thought about just taking the house off the market until things pick up here

I think the mortgage rates also play a key role in the housing market right now. My MIL passed away and her house is on the market just listed in Texas and there have been over 650 on line views in a week and only 5 showings, it is priced right and has schools close by so hoping it will sell while kids are on summer vacation. You are in a nice neighborhood with housing pricing at the upper end so that does play a role as well. It is a hard decision to make but this is prime real estate time for people with kids. Wishing your house will sell soon.

Thanks Golfgirl! There are high end homes in my neighborhood, but not mine! Those houses sell fast to people who pay cash. My house, with 4 big bedrooms would be a perfect family home but most buyers are either retirees or want a 2nd home. There are some families, but not many. I'm not sure I want to sell my house in a buyer's market. I'm grouchy today. My realtor's assistant called and someone wants to see the house at 1pm. I should be happy, right?

I wish I had a magic solution for you, Fritzy. Trust your gut, but ignore the anxious voices.

I feel you. I have to buy snacks as I have a teenager but I’ve quit buying ones I specifically like. I’m not currently losing but have been able to maintain or shed a couple of gained pounds quickly by intermittent fasting and having a couple of reset days. I pick two days to really limit my calories and carbs and up my protein. The rest of the time I try to be sensible but doesn’t always work. One thing I don’t do anymore is snack between meals. When I need something sweet I have these Quest mini peanut butter cups and I eat ONE after a meal. Or the sugar free ones are great from regular brand. Last thing is if you are caught out and famished keep healthy snacks in your purse or car like almonds or jerky.

Thanks Chrp70! I am in such a bad mood right now that I really hope I can only have the chips I planned on when watching the debate later. But I tend to stress eat so need to avoid the Heaven Daz ice cream bars in the garage freezer!

Thanks Kat! That is really good advice! The anxious voices are telling me just forget about selling the house right now and wait until early next year when there are few homes on the market. My gut tells me to put up with this stupid process for awhile because I really want to move sooner rather than later. Both of those things can change day to day though

Fritzy im watching a YouTube video of a realtor showing a mansion that was built in 2005 for $22,000,000 and is selling fully furnished and in fantastic shape for $6,900,000 currently. It’s somewhere near Detroit Michigan but that is something to see. That would not be a fun position to be in. Or maybe that’s just rich people problems. Hope whatever makes the most sense for you comes your way. May be you get the offer you want the day you decide to pull off the market. Life is funny that way.

I can relate. Having "unhealthy" snacks around is too tempting for me. I do best with avoidance but I don't do best with doing without completely. My problem is all of the conflicting info. When I went to nursing school almost all patients were on a regular diet except diabetics who had exchanges. It was more along the lines of a My Plate method - Meat/fish/beans/protein, some dairy, sometimes a starch/whole grains, a veggie or 2, a piece of fruit. No super sizing. No forbidden foods. Most of my friends are medical people - doctors, nurses, dietitians, physical therapist, occupational therapists, Xray technicians, lab technicians. Back then we all agreed on what a healthy diet was. Now few of us do. Some of my friends, especially the dietitians, still favor the My Plate type method. They don't focus on good and bad foods but on eating a varied balanced diet. Filling that plate from options from each group. So that if on one day you choose potato chip sand something with more vitamins and minerals the next they are not too concerned about it. What concerns them is if you live on drive thru for breakfast, drive thru for lunch, drive thru for supper, and drive thru for snacks. I actually worked with a woman like that who ate at Hardees 3-4 times a day. Not much vitamins and minerals and nutrients in that. If that is where you are headed you need to rethink your house selling. I have bought and sold many houses. My family was in the rental business with hundreds of properties. People have to eat and use the restroom and prospective buyers and brokers need to acknowledge that. You and Bobby should not have to suffocate out in the car somewhere. You still own your home and need to be able to use it. It is not a museum and no one should expect it to be.

Please don’t blame Costco! We went there yesterday and only bought healthy snacks. In the health section, near the pharmacy are some great vegetable GF chips for 5.99. Also, organic blueberry muffins in freezer section packed with carrots and zucchini. I can post pics if you want them. Also, I’m in my 13th house and never had to sacrifice cooking if I chose. Meal prep some summer salads that pair well with cold protein. Think grilled chicken, smoked salmon, chicken or tuna salad. Hopefully, you’ll see you can do better with some will power and planning. Good luck

I make Joe go to Sam's Club cuz I would buy too much stuff too. I'm good about losing what I gained but I will sample everything and then impulse buy it. I can't believe you haven't gotten an offer on your house! Real estate seems kind of messed up now..hope it gets better! Can you try to prep some healthy snacks? Maybe that would help...🩷🩷🩷

Fritzy 22, I think it’s good you acknowledge your temptations. I have tried not having those in the house, but often fall for the great price! You certainly have a lot of stressors. Just remember to take it a step at a time; you WILL reach your goal!

Thanks YOH! I'm better now. I was having a melt down earlier than my mortgage officer called me and calmed me down. So did Kat's comment.

Thanks Morticia! I have my coffee and yogurt almost every morning. I still don't eat dinner, so if I get anything out to eat it's usually lunch and 1 or 2 times a weeks, although whatever I get will be good for 2 days. Until the heat wave I did have some not too bad eating days. Today i was going to have a Lean Cuisine for lunch but after I knew someone was coming through the house at 1, I decided to get a pizza. Had 2 pizzas for a late lunch and will have it again tomorrow and then either freeze the rest or have more on the next day. You know I do not like to cook regardless of what is going on. The current situation just allows me not to have to cook. Normally, i would piece together my daily WOE. Low fat string cheese and raw almonds for snacks to get in protein. Maybe egg salad or some other 1/2 sandwich for lunch or the Asian chicken salad I actually enjoying making. Things will get back to normal at some point. Right now I'm just happy I've avoided the snacks today so far. May skip them entirely because of the unplanned pizza.

Mello, I'm not blaming Costco for anything

Thanks Diana! I am out of the mozzarella cheese snacks I usually snack on,but I bought fresh blackberries at Costco and will put chopped almonds in the morning yogurt. Other than that, no healthy snacks right now. I was talking to my real estate agent and mortgage officer and the high end homes on the lake are selling, otherwise there is not much selling. Even houses on the golf course are taking awhile. But at least more people seem to be looking.

Thanks Mimodw! I do better without certain foods/snacks in the house. But I have them now and will try to restrain myself as much as possible. I am pretty stressed but will probably be totally fine tomorrow.

wow!!! I wish you all the best Fritzy22 in selling your home, I hope you don't have to go to low.

Thanks Buenita! You are always so nice! I probably won't go much lower in price at this time hut my mortgage loan officer is working figures for me to figure out what I can afford to do

I can relate to the chips. It’s hard to eat when portion size someone said eat it with your lunch. That way you’re not just eating a whole bag. Good luck with selling your home. Maybe you could wait till the market changes if not sell it for what you needfor the new home in Oregon
