I WON THE LOTTERY!!! Okay, I didn't. Sometimes I see weight loss as a lottery. We live in a culture of instant gratification. Let's face it - instant gratification is how most of us pack on the weight. With that instant gratification we pack on the pounds slowly and one day wake up and realize we have a lot of weight to lose. (I wish journal entries would allow paragraphgs. It drives me nuts.) <para> While we can easily eat 5000 calories if we eat calorie dense foods, losing it is another issue. We're stuck with a calorie cut of a few hundred calories, so the weight comes off far slower than at goes on. If you cut 500 calories a day, you can lose around 1 pound of fat in a week. With a 5000 calorie day, some people could put on 1 pound in that day. Back to the lottery. <para> The problem with winning the lottery is that we didn't work to get there. Huh? It's true. We've all heard of people winning millions, and within several months, they're broke. Why? Because they didn't work to get it and the have no idea how to keep it. Diet is the same way. If we ever found that magic pill that we could take at night and wake up 20 pounds lighter, we'd be chronic over-eaters and we would still have the problems that go with gaining weight, ie, the nutritional deficit. <Para> To make it work, you have to work it. You can't fool around at the edges and flit from diet to diet to diet and expect results. Start saving money and reap the rewards. Start saving (cutting) your calories, and reap the narrower waistline. Don't buy the diet lottery tickets (books) which are the next diet fad. You're making someone else rich.

Wisdom words have been written here! Totally agree with you; we really need rto work for it and not wait for this to happen automatically. Congrats for 'winning the lottery'!

Thanks for the words of wisdom--it helps us all to remember that this is not a short term fix, but a change of habits.

Very well stated!

You are so right. Since I only see my clients once or twice a year, I get a lot of ... "My Gosh! How did you lose so much weight." When you tell them that it was diet and exercise, their eyes go blank and they lose interest.

I'm really glad you said this. It's what people like me need to hear. I know that I only burn between 1600-1800 calories per day. That being said, I need some calories to live on, right? So even at a "drastic" 1000 calories, I could lose at the most, 700 calories/day or 5000 calories per week, or 1.4 pounds. Wow. And that's if I am strict at 1000 calories. So much easier to gain than lose, just like it's easier to spend money than pay off debt. Reminds me of a post I made a week ago. I so needed to hear this. Thank you, NM, for this juicy bit of wisdom that reminds me to be patient and just keep plodding along.

so, so true... and it is a commitment to lose.. one has to be willing to give up --for want of a better word--bad foods..... (my bad foods) sugars, fried items, pasta, white potatoes, and just over-eating.. etc.... and that is so true about the magic pill... working hard for a goal is better, and more lasting, than something easily handed to you... you rock !!

Interesting analogy. Hope you know we all believe you are a big winner!

haha. Thanks, buffy. Hey, plprentiss. I think you have a great point there. Are there bad foods, or do we each have our own weaknesses so we each have our own little belief about what a bad food is? That's a question worth answering! It would likely solve a lot of arguments like 'fats are bad', 'carbs are bad', 'your protein is too high'. Love this board. You come to a conclusion, state what you have learned, and someone else says something that makes you think about it all from another angle again. I'm to old to believe I know it all. I still have children at the age of infinite wisdom. I think I'm starting to get smarter slowly in their estimation though.

We get smarter and wiser as we age. Too bad we didn't have this wisdom 30 years ago.

I agree. There is no magic solution. The way to lose weight AND to keep it off, because THAT actually is the goal,is to educate ourselves & that education encompasses a wide variety of topics. Far too many to list here. Then have personal application of that education for our lifetime. That is *my* goal :D Each of us learn in different ways. Some are hands on,jumping right in & learning as they go. Some prefer to not do anything until they know all the ins & outs. And then there are those who rely on trial & error, trying anything & everything until they get it right. The different ways of learning may be as varied as the topics of education I mentioned earlier. In my opinion,I think if *diet* books get people involved in *thinking* & that thinking is then led to *making changes* toward a *better* way, then I say "Write the books.Buy the books!" We should do our utmost to not allow the *important* things:the education process, which is not a one size fits all process,to become buried. To repeat that in another way: Education(accurate information) changes peoples THINKING. When peoples THINKING is changed to harmonize with the accurate information,LIVES are changed because *action* FOLLOWS *thought*...What we think about,we bring about :D POWERFUL!

Voila! Thank you for sharing your wisdom. As my dad's doctor said, when he had a physical a few years ago and asked his doctor how to deal with the extra pounds the years had put on, "Eat less, exercise more!" I was a nurse and my doctor was always being asked about the latest diet fad. He was pretty frustrated, because he knew that people that looked for the magic "fat solution" were likely going to yo-yo up and down. He said that he thought the only diet on the market he could even remotely recommend was the South Beach Diet, but even so, he just recommended people learn about portions, what comprised a balanced diet, etc. I have a good friend who is a nutritionist and it always makes me feel better to have her validate my choices in looking at my health in the long term and not calling this "dieting," but rather a lifestyle change. She loves real butter and rich desserts, but just eats healthy the rest of the time and "treats" herself occasionally. I like that attitude.

I suppose there's no chance of a loan then? lol Everything you say is very true, we all know it, but need to be reminded of it sometimes. Thanks

No problem king. *Genuflects.* No. You can't use them. I keep them for when I weld. First rule of welding. Wear pants big enough that you can get them off in a hurry when they start on fire. :D

Kingstephen ,Sure! there is a chance of loan , but you have to pay it within a stipulated period of time and that too with interest . For example , if you eat a sweet today for your craving , you will have to put more amount of effort within a certain period or you will have to bear the consequences .

TXSnowman..it must be a Lone Star state thing...I have the same issue. People ask "How did you lose all that weight?" and the minute I say it's all diet and exercise and hard work, I lose them lol.
