47 years old.
Married to a wonderful man for almost 25 years.
Three kids. Oldest is married with two little boys, aged 2-1/2 and 4 months.
Middle child is studying abroad in Sweden and I miss him like crazy (we're half way through his 10 months away).
Youngest child lives at home and is attending local community college.
Proud parent/owner of an 8-year old Pomeranian and a 7-year old Cocker Spaniel. They are exhausting at times, and it makes it tricky to show our house (which is on the market because it is just TOO much house for the three of us), but I find it hard to imagine life without them.

I became a nurse in 2000, but injured my back in 2003. I continued to work until 2007, at which time I gave up my full-time position and switched to unscheduled. I continued that way for two years, but when they stopped giving me work, I started nannying for a friend's child.

For the last two years I have been trying without success to find employment again as a nurse. I guess if I was able to work full-time, I'd have no problem. I find satisfaction working as a Senior Helper half-time.

I come from a family of "big boned" women. My mother has rarely been below a size 18-20 since her early 30s. Until my back injury, I had almost managed to stay in the size 12 range, but am now up to a size 16.

I care more about overall health than a number on the scale. I don't want to develop diabetes, so becoming more active and losing a few pounds seems like a good plan to me.

I love to sing, read, craft (sewing and counted cross-stitch) and spend time with my kids and grandkids. I would love to travel someday, so I hope to decrease my pain and increase my endurance to make this dream a reality.

How Often Do you weigh yourself?
I might weigh myself every 3-4 days, but I only count my weekly weigh in. Like other people have said, I stick to the exact same time of day (first thing in the morning, right after using the rest room with minimal clothing on). If you weigh later in the day, you can be up by as much as 3-4 lbs! Consistency is the key.

Phentermine / Duromine : Discuss ???
Not surprised it struck a cord. Lots of people took it. You are so right that will power from a pill is not will power. On the other hand, I am not judging people that really need a helping hand to stick with it. As long as one can find something non-addictive and safe, I am all for it since it generally leads to better health in the long-run when you are able to drop the weight and keep it off.

Phentermine / Duromine : Discuss ???
Yeah, back when Metabolife was still available with both ingredients present, I tried it. I am a cheap so-and-so and didn't like to spend money on possible diet aids, so I didn't do it until a friend saw it much cheaper at Costco. She asked me to go in on a value-sized bottle.

I lost 2 lbs. the first week and 1 lb. for the following 3 weeks and then my weight loss just stalled. My momentum fizzled away. So, I quit taking it all together, besides, I didn't really like how it made me feel. My friend had more success with it, but she became obsessive about taking it and was taking the absolute MAXIMUM, which really worried me. Sure enough, she started experiencing heart palpitations and ended up discussing it with her doctor.

Guess what? Her doctor told her to CUT IT OUT!!! So far, on this latest journey of mine, I have had far better success than I ever did taking pills and I feel I have learned great lifelong habits along the way. You don't get any of that added benefit from popping pills.

Medications that cause weight gain
So sorry! I too gained 50 lbs. over 10 years (couldn't exercise after herniated disk). As a nurse, I have been angry when my patients were concerned about weight gain associated with a medication, only to have the doctor either ignore their concerns or get frustrated with them and berate them for putting "vanity" over health. Those same stinkin' doctors were constantly changing their own medications when they didn't like the side effects, so they are COMPLETE hypocrites. Not to mention, they are the first to give you crap for being at an unhealthy weight!

I personally have advocated for my patients and suggested better ways to communicate with their doctors to pursue other avenues of treatment and/or try a different medication. I remember one particular fellow employee that used to see the doctor I worked with. He put her on a high blood pressure medication and she started having difficulty breathing. Not severe or life threatening, just annoying, almost like panic attacks. I told her that even if he ASSURED her that that particular medication did not have that as a side effect, she should still insist he try a test and put her on something else. It worked!!

Girl Scout Cookies
Kristyanne3, so glad we were good for a few laughs! RoseTampa, hope we aren't messing with your resolve. I vote you give away three boxes and put the other box in your freezer. Then, when you start craving terrible, sweet desserts that would truly railroad your efforts, give yourself permission to eat just TWO (only 70 calories) of them.
