Not knowing exactly when the rain would start, I did my morning run in the vicinity of my home today, as I didn't want to risk being caught far away from it and getting soaked. I still had to face the wind but it was much better than facing the dreadful combination of wind AND rain.

I saw a man setting up his Christmas lights and decorations in front of his house, with his wife supervising his efforts from the doorstep. He was standing on a ladder, putting blue lights up a tree. A number of decorations featuring Father Christmas riding on his sleigh, carrying a bag full of presents, standing waving, elves loading the sleigh, etc, were already covering the facade of the house. I had plenty of opportunities to check them in detail, as I ran past a few times. They made the house look like a giant Christmas tree and it seems to be the only one that has been decorated that way for the time being. But as we're getting nearer to the holidays, I fear plenty of others will follow suit.

I also saw a pied wagtail at the end of the cul-de-sac where I live. Normally those little birds are quite flighty and hard to get close to but that one didn't appear to be bothered by my presence, or even disturbed when I slowed down and looked at it. Their plumage is a beautiful pattern of contrasting black and white but, that little bird displayed an area of yellow underneath its body. It was still walking very fast, which made observation difficult, but it otherwise looked very much like a regular pied wagtail, waging its tail endlessly. As I tried to get closer, it took to the air suddenly and, with its wings stuck to its body, seemed to dive through the wind, as blue tits do, only beating its wings intermittently.

After some investigation online, it appears I may have seen either a grey wagtail or a yellow wagtail but I cannot be sure: the little fellow wasn't standing still and wouldn't allow itself to be approached beyond a certain point.

22 November 2015

I did a 30 minutes run this morning: the sun was resplendant and shining a silvery light in the sky but couldn't cut through the crisp cold.

As I walked past the gym, a jay bird flew across the road in front of me and disappeared into the trees on the other side. I wondered if it was the same bird I had seen two weeks ago on the walking path, not far from the same road.

I went on and saw the football pitch on my left. On entering it, I toyed with the idea of doing my run there but under that lush green grass, the ground wasn't just soft but soggy, muddy and treacherously slippery. I gave up on the idea and walked to the empty holiday camp I had already gone to two days before and started my run there.

I could see frozen puddles on the cracked tarmac of the driveway and I had to swerve or jump over them a few times to avoid them. Other people were walking their dogs in the silent camp and an older lady warned me of a frozen puddle ahead. The ice forming there overnight and melted during the day only to reappear in the evening may explain the sorry state of the road surface. The cold made the first ten minutes of the run feel much harder than usual and I started to find going the long way to avoid frozen puddles quite tedious: after running around it once, I left the camp and took the direction of the town centre.

There were a few runners out and about and we would greet each other or nod at each other when we needed to catch our breath. One particularly courageous man was running in shorts and exposing his bare legs to the fierce bite of the cold. I assumed that as he was running and sweating, he more than likely didn't feel the cold but he must have shivered when he stepped out of his home. As for myself, I was wearing a pullover and tracksuit trousers but I had to walk briskly to warm myself up when I first got out of the house.

I ran to Rock-A-Nore and to the end of it, where the car park hangs over the sea: the air was so crisp and clear I could actually see all the way across the sea to Dungeness and its power stations. Even from that distance, the structures making up the power stations felt huge and I could also distinguish the shapes of the wind turbines nearby: their blades didn't appear to be moving but from such a distance, I couldn't be sure.

I stopped running once the 30 minutes were up but kept on walking briskly and almost immediately took the direction of home. It was particularly important to keep my metabolism up not to feel the cold and I didn't slow down one bit until I got close to the house.

Once I stepped inside and even though the heater was off, it felt warm by comparison and I could enjoy my breakfast and a cup of coffee with my partner.
