I have been reading and watching videos about the whole "Bulletproof" diet...including the coffee, which I learned about here. It is intriguing to me, because it reflects the direction I have been heading in for some time now. Eating more fat, less carbs....and getting those carbs from veggies. Eating meat that is locally sourced and grass fed or pasture raised when possible. And focusing more on greens than high carb veggies.

The coffee is crazy sounding to anyone who believes the USDA prescription for a healthy diet. Start your day with 10 oz. of coffee, blended with at LEAST 2 Tbsp of Kerrygold (or pasture raised) butter, unsalted of course, and 2 Tbsp of MCT. MCT is medium chain triglycerides derived from coconut oil. They are all of a length that is easily absorbed, and believed to help kick in ketosis quickly, and stimulate your metabolism. So, a cup of coffee with a big dollop of fat, blended up to creamy goodness. If you are raising your eyebrows, I can't blame you.

The thing is, it has worked as advertised for me. I had some instead of lunch yesterday...actually with some chai tea...and this morning for breakfast. I feel sharper, and more energized than I have in a very, very long time. Ketosis was definitely in gear...many, many trips to the bathroom yesterday! And that was after having a good breakfast a few hours earlier. And the scale was down, even though my calories were over my recently lowered RDI. Today the ketosis effect should be greater since I am having it first thing, as prescribed.

I am a skeptic about most things that sound this "extreme"....or I used to be more of a skeptic. But after having so little success with calorie counting and a low fat diet, I have been more willing to try other things. And I have been seeing more success with these other approaches. In the end, I don't think losing weight is a one-size fits all experience. And I think our own biochemistry changes over time, so things that worked for me in the past...Weight Watchers, for instance,...no longer do. I plan to try out this coffee for breakfast for the next two weeks, and see how I feel. The better the coffee you use....processed gently, and fresh, with no mold or mycotoxins...the better it is for you. I am lucky to have a top notch coffee roaster right here in town.

Maybe this will be a little blip. Maybe not. I am willing to give it a go, and see what happens. I have already been eating high levels of fat in my diet, to good effect. The only real change is this coffee concoction. BTW...it kind of screwed with FS's calculations. This morning after entering my "breakfast", my pie chart showed 102% of my calories as fat, and -2% carbs. Now that is what I call a low carb diet!

Yesterday was an up and down day emotionally. Lots of running around for the kids. My youngest got her driver's license yesterday. Another parenting hurdle crossed for good now. And she broke up with her boyfriend of about 6 months. He is a sweetheart, and I understand her choice but feel terrible for him. You never anticipate this aspect of being a parent when you have kids.
My oldest daughter picked up her first car yesterday. She is doing well in her job, and now I will no longer have to drive back and forth 17 miles everyday. It is like getting 2 to 3 extra hours in my day, and a few extra dollars in my wallet. :) But I will have a little extra worry now about her safety....I'll get over that one eventually, but it is there. She broke up with her girlfriend as well this past week....but in that case, I am breathing a sigh of relief. It was not a match made in heaven, by any stretch of the imagination.
Finally, my DH and DD and I went to a concert in the back yard of one of my kids preschool teachers! It was amazing. They asked for a donation of $15/per person, and all the money went to the artist. And then they had tons of yummy food(she is a great cook), set up under tents. I went way over on my carbs for the day, but stayed at a good ratio overall...and my weight held steady for the day!
The musician is Danielle Miraglia. She sings a blues/rock/folk sort of mix....I guess a little like Bonnie Raitt. And she writes most of her own songs. Every year, for the last few years, this teacher and her husband sponsor this concert in their backyard, and invite friends and family. It is a great event, and such a generous thing to support a musician struggling to make a career. She tours...mostly on the east coast, but now heads to the midwest and west a bit. You can hear some her music at her website, if your are interested:

A detailed list of some things I am thankful for:

1. My husband. I am thankful we have been together for almost 22 years, through great times, and some really difficult times when we both thought we weren't going to make it. He has been a terrific father, and has been supportive to me as I have had a very circuitous career path since the kids were born. He has carried a tremendous financial burden in the process. He has never loved me any less as my weight when up and down and back up, up, and up.

2. My kids. With two teenage daughters, it is easy some days to wonder why I had kids, but it takes only about 10 seconds to remember. They have made my life richer and deeper. I have learned things about myself, and about life in general that I never would have learned without them. They inspire me, and entertain me. I am proud of them, and love them deeply.

3. Color. I am thankful for a world full of color, and that we get to see it, unlike many creatures in the world. It inspires me as an artist, it makes me stop in my tracks at times, or just pause and take in the beauty....whether it is in the color of the sky, the riot of colors in a garden, or in a yarn shop! I am not picky...I love them all!

4. Tea. I was a coffee drinker. But in an attempt to cut back on caffeine, I started drinking more tea. And I started finding some great teas that have made that hot (or cold) beverage a rich sensory experience. The aroma of my citrus chamoimille tea in my thermos on a cold morning is a moment I relish. Chai tea, black or white is an escape from the ordinary. Mint melange is a psychological lift when I have a dip in the afternoon. I just finished brewing a pitcher of licorice ice tea, and I can't wait for it to cool down enough for me to pour myself a nice tall glass.

5. My dog. I am really not a dog person. But my daughter desperately wanted one for years. I finally gave in, and of course, her care and feeding has fallen mostly to me. But, over time I have come to appreciate the little joys she brings me. Aside from her sheer happiness at having someone pet her, or play with her, she gets me outside almost every day, for a walk(s). On those walks I get to take in the day, and experience first hand, not through a window of my car, or house, or office, what the world is like that day. I get to run into neighbors, and get to know them better. I often walk with my husband in the morning, and because the dog needs to be walked, we have managed to carve out a reliable 15 to 20 minutes every day that we spend together talking...or not.

That's good for now!
