22 July 2009

Saturday, the 18th, marked the end of my 10th week on the diet. For years, I have worn pants with a 40" waist. The catch is, they had elastic in the waist, so the true measurement might've been 42", 44" or maybe 46" on any given day. My elastic pants reminded me of the pants clowns wear, the ones that someone squirts seltzer down.

Sunday, the 19th, I went to a department store to see if, in fact, my diet did help me reduce my waistline. I mentioned in an earlier post that lost inches around my waist was the way I would mark the diet's success, not necessarily loss of pounds.

I tried on a pair of 38" jeans, no elastic, and lo and behold, I was able to button the jeans and was still able to breathe. In fact, they might even require a belt. A miracle no less grand than the creation of the Universe itself.

And so it goes...

Being absolutely disgusted with myself, having been relatively thin for most of my life, I embarked upon this regimen knowing that it will take a great deal of unswerving discipline and as much time to rectify my dietary transgressions of the past decade. I am in it for the long haul.

Rules to which I submit:

1) I start with an unknown beginning weight. The beginning weight does not matter. If I knew my peak weight or even my weight at the beginning of this dietary experiment, I would hang myself, though I probably could not find a rope and beam strong enough to support me. I've decided to use 275 lbs. as a beginning weight. It might be high, it might be low. I do not know. The important number is my goal: 180 lbs.

2) I will not weigh myself until I must change to a smaller clothes size. I have found "constant" weighing in, even on a weekly basis, often provides more discouragement than encouragement. I embark upon this project for the long term, therefore, small changes in weight, to me, are not that important. If I can exercise the discipline to begin and maintain this diet, I can exercise the patience needed not to weigh myself until I know I have made substantial progress. For me, that will be measured by clothes size.

3) Am I serious about the diet? Yes. Therefore, I will absolutely stick to my 1,200 calorie-a-day meal plan and I will absolutely stick to my modest exercise plan. Period. No exceptions. I'll eat and drink whatever I want to, whenever I want to, provided I do not exceed my 1,200 calorie limit. I must be able to tally the calories of anything I eat.

I can see and feel progress I've made to this point. Hooray for me. I am in the middle of my fifth week at fatsecret.com. For what it provides, fatsecret.com is one of the classic and great websites. It may be the most important site I personally have ever encountered. It provides me the raw data concerning food and exercise and an ability to creatively calculate and record my personal dietary data. This was one of the aspects missing in every other diet I've attempted, but it is an essential aspect. It makes the mundane caloric numbers game interesting and educational. It makes my meal planning a day's meals "almost fun" instead of a constant challenge.

Thanks to fatsecret.com, I can see the incredible errors I made in my eating habits of the past. Thanks to this website, the act of eating all begins to make sense now. My sincere thanks to the powers behind the site.
