Cravings
I also agree - not allowing yourself to indulge in little things here and there means you'll hate dieting, and you'll end up sabotaging yourself. Allowing yourself to sit back and really enjoy some 'sinful' foods in small portions is the way to go! Count them for what they're worth, but make sure you really take the time to enjoy them. It will be a little break from 'diet' foods, and overall, it'll help keep you on track.
Maybe do it as a reward. I know I've done it that way in the past, to success. If you have a good week, and you eat well and exercise, allow yourself a bit of your favorite 'non-diet' food. It won't undo your hard work.

Birthday Party Worries
my birthday is also on sunday, but luckily i have a little time to prep before the family get-together. I like the idea of eating before the party, though. It seems like a clever way to avoid overeating at the party. Do you have other things that could distract you from the food? Volleyball or swimming or something of the like? It's always hardest for me to avoid food when I have nothing else to do!
