When I go and reach for a can of coke out of the fridge, I do it because I like the taste of it and the pleasure that comes from quenching my thirst with a sugary drink. It is a conscious choice. It's not because my car wouldn't start this morning, or because the boss gave me a dirty look, or because Sally said something hurtful about me behind my back, or because I'm worried about my finances, or because I was concerned about those llamas getting loose the other day (I mean what if they got hit by a car or something), or because my wife said she would buy the greek-style yogurt but she didn't - she bought the stirred kind that I don't like as much and you know I'm beginning to wonder if she is doing it on purpose, or because I wish my hair would grow back, or because I'm jealous that most of my friends are taller than me, or because.....well...you get the idea. When I have that can of coke, I'm having empty calories and working against my overall objective that I have set for myself and no one else. In that instant, I am choosing temporary satisfaction over long term success. There is nothing and no one to blame but yours truly. Own it people.
