05 January 2015

Weight was down a tiny bit from yesterday. Still think it was sodium. Started out the day well, egg whites with veggies, and a light English muffin. Lunch, however, was another story. We went to a movie house that serves a full menu. I had a cheeseburger and fruit cup (they called it a fruit cup, it was really a cup of grapes with a couple tiny pieces of pineapple, lol). That wasn't really so bad....but we opted to have dessert. I figured what the heck, I wasn't having snacks today, and had some carrot cake. Ironically, I think I will still be within calories today, because I still feel totally full from all that and don't plan to have any dinner this evening. If anything, I may have a piece of fruit, but not even sure about that.

School starts here tomorrow, so hopefully we will be getting back to a normal routine around here.

Weight is up about 1/2 lb today. Not really concerned though....I pushed my calorie limit yesterday (1800), but pretty sure I didn't go over it. Most likely the burger I had at a restaurant for lunch was the culprit...I loaded it with healthy toppings, but the amount of sodium in pretty much anything at a restaurant is enough to cause a little fluctuation. I'm sure it will be back on track in another day or so.

The knee pain is much better today, so I'm hoping to get a few minutes of exercise. I have to visit a friend in the hospital today...relatively young woman still, dealing with complications of diabetes that wasn't kept in check. She has heart problems now, among other things. Inspires me to keep pushing, to try and get myself healthier. I am "borderline", and need to do all I can to keep it from progressing.

Had my first ever breakfast smoothie this morning, and it was good! Spinach, pineapple, mango, banana, coconut water, and flaxseed. I really wanted to chew something, though, and finally gave in to that urge and had some almonds and walnuts. I like the smoothie idea though...it's usually so difficult to get all the servings of fruit and veggies that I need.

No eating out today....getting back to normal. Making pork stir-fry and brown rice for lunch. For dinner, I'll be on my own so making a chicken fajita out of some leftover chicken tenders. I have to figure out some sides and snacks, because so far my plan for today is only about 1200 calories.

Down .4 lb today. Having pain in my knees (from the brief bike rides most likely). Taking some Aleve and will gauge later whether I'm up for trying again today.

We always eat out as a family on Saturdays. It can be a challenge to stay on track, but thankfully so many places have their nutrition information online so I plan before I go. Today we are going to Fuddruckers. Incredible burgers. In reading the nutrition I found that I'm actually getting fewer calories with a regular beef burger than with a turkey burger....and the wedge fries have fewer calories than their sweet potato fries. This is opposite of the numbers I get when I prepare similar items at home, so it all comes down to HOW it's prepared. It pays to read the nutrition info. I'm still skipping the fries, though...will probably have either fruit or baked black beans.

Making the family a simple pastry for breakfast, using crescent rolls. Trying to tweak it to make it a bit healthier...lower fat cream cheese, stevia instead of sugar, blueberries. Not the healthiest I could do, but still trying to use up some things that were purchased prior to getting back on the diet. Probably won't be making these again for a long time, so will enjoy it today.

Weight holding steady today, not up or down. Yesterday was a tougher day. Just after I wrote that I wasn't having hunger issues, I was hungry most of the day. That tells me something I ate triggered those old hunger and craving issues...usually only sugar does that to me. I resisted the temptation, though, and stuck to my plan...ending with about 1700 calories for the day. So far today I'm not feeling hungry. In fact, slept about two hours late and the spent an hour answering email before I even got around to breakfast. Still wasn't hungry but had a bowl of oatmeal.

I picked up ground flaxseed at the market this week, and am now trying to add it in wherever possible...oatmeal, cream of wheat, doughs. Also, I have been wanting to try apple cider vinegar, after reading a lot about some of the benefits. The smell and taste are putrid, I admit. I tried taking it in a glass of water as suggested, but that just prolongs the bad taste. Instead, I'm taking a tablespoon of it straight from the spoon, then washing it down with a lot of water. Will give it a try for a few weeks at least and see...I have a family member who swears by it, he has been taking a spoonful a day for years. I have read conflicting things about whether it helps with weight, but that's not what I'm taking it for anyway. It's the health issues it supposedly can help with that I'm curious about.

Yesterday I got my old stationary bike cleaned up and useable. I did a short, 10 minute ride. Didn't have any pain, so I think I'm okay to keep at it....will keep it at 10 minutes for a little while to make sure I'm not doing myself harm.

It is still rainy and cold here, but I need to get out of the house today before cabin fever sets in. I need to pick up some chicken, green beans, and red potatoes for a one-dish dinner recipe I want to try out. I want to do something easy for dinner, as I'm still trying to sort out new years resolutions and get my household ready for 2015. Decluttering is high on my list of priorities and there is a charity pick-up in my neighborhood next week. A good opportunity to get rid of some things.

Hope everyone is getting off to a solid start to the new year!
