It's nice when you're using a system meant to reduce complex, difficult to analyze real life data into meaningful information, and it works perfectly.
Some background: According to NASA, your weight can vary as much as 8 lbs internally. Even with weighing at the same time every day, there are frustrating and hard-to-explain variances that tend to make you angry at yourself: of course you gained 4 lbs this morning, yesterday you "were bad" because you had a creampuff. Eventually, the whole process of weightloss becomes frustrating because you have an apparently easy form of feedback that is telling you data that is not only not helpful, but actively makes you alternatingly paranoid or moralistic about food eating.
So when I saw the co-founder of AutoCad, a talented software engineer named John Walker had attempted to reduce nutrition and weightloss to a engineering problem (namely, one that could be solved with math) I was intrigued. He makes a gold standard argument of reductionist scientific thinking, calling the human body a rubber bag that inputs food and exports energy and poop. As such, he essentially recommends calorie counting. (He calls it an "eat watch" for people who don't know when to stop eating, filling the same role as a watch for people who are perpetually late).
But he also created a statistical weighted average equation for representing estimated real body-fat loss. It's a spreadsheet, one you can either use from his site or download into a spreadsheet program like excel. I've been using it for years, actually, but it never occurred to me to check the math his equation was spitting out. It was damn near perfect. Today I "lost" 4 lbs, which dragged my trend weight down 0.6 lbs. According to my relatively thorough calorie estimates, my calorie balance yesterday was -2001, about .57 of the calories in a pound of fat (3500). I randomly checked a few past weight entries, and it held true. Losing weight is incredibly less stressful when reality conforms to my expectations of reality.
I want to get a degree in information systems now.
