It's funny how little attention I pay to my weight. Over the past year I have gained a net of about 6 pounds, but I was shocked to realize how much I weight. Growing up I always hated the way the women around me valued themselves based on their weight. I promised myself not to be that way. My struggle is going to be finding a healthy way to take care of my body and maintain weight without confusing weight with personal value or success.

I have decided to try the Mayo Clinic diet because I trust the Mayo clinic, it seems like a fairly healthy way to lose weight, and it makes sense to me. I am really committing to this - using the journal (although substituting Fat Secret for the exercise and food records) and following the plan.

For the next 2 weeks I am supposed to add 10 habits and lose 5. Here are my goals:
1. Eat only healthy fats (from plants)
2. Eat fruits and vegetables
3. Eat whole grains
4. Exercise at least 30 minutes each day
5. Eat a healthy breakfast
6. Keep a diet record
7. Keep an exercise record
8. Exercise an additional 30 minutes for a total of 60 minutes/day
9. Eat real, unprocessed food when possible
10. Write daily goals and motivations

Things to stop:
1. No snacks unless it is a fruit or vegetable
2. No eating in front of the tv, and limit tv time to time spent moving
3. No sugar or alcohol
4. No eating out unless I can be sure to stick to the plan (Tonight I spent a good 30 minutes with my brother trying to figure out a place we could eat. We settled on the China Buffet, where there were plenty of steamed veggies and fresh fruit.)
5. Eat less meat (about the size of a deck of cards each day) and (low fat)dairy

I have made it one day. I know I can do this, I just have to decide that it's worth it to me. Wish me luck!
