Shakes?
I assume when you say "shaky" that you mean the weak, lightheaded type of shaky. In that case you need to eat something before you work out.
If you are just talking about the muscles that you were using are shaking, or twitching, then it could be muscle failure. In the Army we would sometimes work out until muscle failure, meaning it was physically impossible to do one more push-up or sit-up or whatever. That's not a diet issue, it's just a really strenuous workout.

Is Atkins healthy?
I am very surprised at the number of people who keep saying that Atkins may work for some people, but "I'll keep eating my healthy foods" as if Atkins isn't healthy. Obviously, people are making assumptions without even reading the book, or any of the literature that backs it up. Atkins is "controlled carb." I don't even consider "low-carb" to be accurate, since some people find that they can eat 100g of carbs a day and still maintain their weight, especially if they are heavy exercisers. Of course, there are those who can't eat more than 25g of carbs without gaining, but that is still completely doable. It's all about what your body can handle. I'm starting this diet because I know carbs are a problem for me. I routinely eat entire packages of crackers, chips, cookies, etc when I only intended to eat one or two bites. Same goes for pasta, potatoes, and bread.
Controlling carbs doesn't starve your body. Your body can utilize glucose for energy, or it can use ketones for energy. By heavily restricting carbs in the beginning, you get your body into a state of lipolysis (fat-burning) quickly, where your body is using it's fat stores to make ketones for energy, instead of glucose. I'm no nutritionist, but I took enough biology and chemistry classes in college to know this is scientifically sound and not harmful.
Just my two cents.
BTW, I had the same knee-jerk "it's unhealthy!" response when the 2002 edition hit the shelves and a lot of my coworkers started Atkins. Of course, several of them were doing it wrong, eating Slim Jims every day for lunch...
