I had a successful stem cell transplant and am recovering - lots of nausea and no appetite are the reasons for my weight loss. But the good news is that my kidneys are healing. My nephrologist doubted they would ever recover, but they're doing it. I'm not on the kidney diet any more, but I'm trying to eat healthy foods and avoid high salt, fat, and sugar foods. It's not hard while my appetite is still poor.

This week I just focused on healing my kidneys and didn't worry about my weight. So I ate a low sodium, low protein, anti-inflammatory diet and drank a ton of water and ginger tea. And it worked. I got rid of the edema by the end of the week and lost that 6 pounds in water weight gain. My blood sugar seems to have stayed stable, according to my CBC and metabolic panel yesterday, so I guess all the ginger ale and ginger candy didn't send me flying into diabetes. I got these motion sickness acupressure bands that work for the nausea caused by chemo, and my doctor put me on a new nausea medication, so I shouldn't need as much of the ginger this week. I still worry about type II diabetes, as it runs in my family.
Food has started to lose its taste, which you would think would help me lose interest in it, but so far it just makes me keep trying to find something to eat that tastes good and being disappointed. This week, I'm going to try to simply eat what I have planned and try to enjoy the texture and smell as much as possible.

Water weight. I have pretty bad edema from the medication I've been taking - huge amounts of steroids and pantoprazole. I'm going off the pantoprazole today and that should help some.
Otherwise, my health is pretty good. I've been walking at least a mile a day, split into four sessions to keep my blood moving and I feel stronger. It's gloomy, rainy, and cold now, so sometimes my "walking" consists of jogging in place on my son's mini trampoline combined with jogs around the house, but mostly I walk outside.
I wonder if anyone knows of any non-salt, low fat noshes I can eat in the evenings? The steroids make me think I'm famished and I can't sleep when I'm hungry, but I have to be careful of fat, protein, and salt. Apples and carrots can only do so much (and I don't like carrots).

My kidney function is slowly improving! My hematologist said he talked to my nephrologist who said there is hope that it will eventually return to where it was before the sudden decline. I've been working really hard with the low-sodium, low protein, low inflammation diet and lots of water and it's paying off. I'm less careful with calories because I tend to substitute sugar for salt in things like coleslaw and bread. But my blood sugar levels have stayed steady, so it's a trade-off I can tolerate.
I set a goal for myself to walk a quarter mile four times a day, and I'm actually walking a lot more than that because a quarter mile just doesn't seem worth getting all bundled up for. The point is to keep my blood and lymph moving, so I walk maybe 3/8-1/2 mile each time and after dark, I do 5 minutes of aerobic exercise while my son does his PT exercises. This seems like a pittance compared to what some of you are doing, but it's a huge gain for me over the past six months when combing my hair took twenty minutes and showed up on my fitness watch as "great workout!" I feel stronger all the time.
