I gained 0.4 pounds this week. I can look at this in a number of ways. I can see that I didn't lose - always a disappointment. I can see that last week I lost 5.4 pounds and see this as a mild rebound. I can see that in the month of August I lost 0.8 pounds which is low but a loss. Or I can see that since January 5 months out of 8 I have gained weight.

There are so many ways to 'squint' at weight loss but I have found that looking at the forest is better than focusing on the trees. In my case noting that I have been gaining (some small and some large) in 5 months is a trend that must stop if I have any chance of coming out with a loss or even break even this year. The goal must be to lose each week at least something and that will mean that each month I will be losing and not gaining which will translate into a loss or break even this year.

Saying this I am facing an immediate challenge. I leave home on September 9 and will return on September 23. This is kryptonite for me. The temptation will be high to allow my eating to get out of hand. I am traveling to three different environments. One- in the car (total of 16 hours so meals on the road will happen) Two- at my son's with my daughter traveling with me. This is challenging as both of them enjoy food experiences. As do I. (7 days) and finally 4 days in Edmonton volunteering at a Bazaar (eating at the bazaar is likely and I don't know what is on offer) I will need to not only have an over arching plan but to also put it into effect!

Last week was mostly at home and doing a lot of outside work. Generally I ate on the high end of my eating window with one day well over (over a 100 calories). The physical labour coupled with many suppers happening around 7 to 8 o'clock was not ideal.

I have chain sawed, weed eated, dug up many many rocks (3.5 hours of digging) around my barn. All totaled 5.5 hours of outside work. The landscaping is going along well - George has been hard at it each day and progress is being made! He'll be back next Tuesday now. The rest of my days have been spent attending to paperwork items. Slowly getting those taken care of!

This is truly not telling the 'story'. I have not entered a weight in two weeks because I was away from home last Saturday. Since I have a busy day tomorrow I am entering a day ahead.

When I got back from my 5 day 'city' trip to go to a Blues Festival, I had gained 5.0 pounds. I went back to my ordinary eating when I got home. I have lost 5.2 pounds!

My 0.2 pound loss this morning doesn't tell the story of the major gain followed by the major loss! However, I am thrilled to be back where I started.

The Blues Festival was fabulous. I enjoyed the three days of music. The two bands I particularly enjoyed were Vanessa Collier and The Blue Moon Marquee. Just in case someone reading this might want to check them out!

When I got home I had the flurry of all the things that needed to be done while I was gone. I am starting to catch up on all those chores. It meant I had a day in town where I left my house at 6am and returned home at 7:30pm. I had another day where the morning started at 6am and I finished up my last chore at 8pm.

Today I make kombucha, reconcile accounts for two companies, weed eat, mow, and attend to my garden. And this is a short list!! Likely be at it until at least 6pm though.

Next week looks like it will be a normal fairly quiet one. I am looking forward to it.

I lost 4.6 pounds this week. Keep this in the context that last week I gained 3.6 pounds. I do find when I have a big gain followed by a week of eating within my 'window' that the loss can be quite dramatic. In many ways I feel like I have lost one pound! I am very pleased to see that large weight gain countered this week!

What did I do right? I was careful to eat within my 'window'. I ate one meal at a restaurant and although I was trying to be careful I believe it was relatively high in calories. I tried to find it online but couldn't. It was a Tuna Poke Bowl at Mr. Mike's. I ate over my window once (yesterday!) however what I ate extra was a pan-fried zucchini, onion and mushroom combo. Somehow it just doesn't feel like it was much of a 'cheat'!

The rest of the week I was within or slightly below my window. As always, I find it hard to be certain that I am counting the calories correctly. I suspect there is always more than I am recording as that is human nature.

My lawn is getting away from me as I am waiting for parts for my mower to come in. When they are expected I will be out of town for 5 days so even more delay! I have so much lawn that it is frustrating to get behind! This week I have workers at my house working on some landscaping. Monday cement is being poured. That will be the first leap forward. Then there is more to do after that. I met with the provincial Minister of Child and Family Services one afternoon. I signed the papers and have received the money for selling my father in law's house! Very exciting. I also did a deep clean in my house.

Next week is going to be pretty full. I am working a Casino in Grande Prairie (2 hour drive)one night for the Women's Shelter, meeting with my banker, driving to Edmonton (6 hours) for the Blues Festival and won't be home until the 19th. I suspect it will be two weeks before I check in here again.

I gained this week. No surprise. I ate more than I can and expect a weight loss. Four days out of seven were well above my calorie 'window'.

Some of it has to do with not eating at home. I have been in town for 6 days out of 7. This has been eating out. Some eating out choices were definitely high. Others not so much. The fact is that I am left guessing what I have eaten and I know that the bias is to assume less rather than more. This trips me up even when I try to allow for that tendency. Also there is the attitude that lives within me that eating out is a 'treat' and so I give myself permission to indulge myself a bit more than I would at home.

Recognizing the pitfalls is excellent on my part. What will matter is how I deal with this knowledge so it doesn't keep adding more weight on. Today is a good example. Lunch and possibly supper will be elsewhere. I have a plan for lunch but supper is in limbo.

Very busy week! My landscaping workers continue, I have dealt with a medical appointment, assisted my granddaughter in getting her apartment, walked through the rental property with new renters, got a haircut and today will be driving 2.5 hours each way to wish my friend a happy birthday- made her coconut macaroons as she is gluten and dairy free. My father in law's house should close by next Friday so lots of scrambling has been going on as we got to the final signatures (yesterday!)
