I'm thinking back to the days of my youth and how I and many others were dupped into drinking so many sugary beverages. Sodas were a huge money maker for the restaurant industry. Syrup and carbonated water was all that it took to prepare them. The servings offered grew to enormous sizes and marketed as a steal. What was stolen was the health of many people. The notion that a meal is not complete wothout a sugary drink became the norm.
I thank goodness that I and many others have learned that water is the best hydrator. Often I don't log beverages because the majority of my meals are eaten with water. Now and then I miss the bubbles of soda. My subsitute is carbonated water. Sometimes I add a twist of lemon, lime or some other juice. I can't remember the last time I drank a soda and I don't plan to drink one again...

Marketing has a lot to answer for. I usually put some flavour in my water to get through it. If I follow the principle of half my body weight in water, 15 cups of bland water gets tedious very fast. Having said that even before "dieting" I found that juice/soda left you feeling for more and more and not as satisfied as water or flavoured water. I put a bit of Mauby (caribbean drink - slightly bitterish) and I'm good to go. Kudos to you.

I agree wholeheartedly with you. I drink enough water to float a battleship on a daily basis and my go to drink is ginger/lemon tea that I brew from fresh lemons and ginger, with no sugar.
