And, back down we go again. And, that my friends is how I use my "surplus" days to maintain my weight range whilst engaging is a high level of fitness activities. (see previous posts on fueling and nutrition, and surplus cal days)

Do, I ever think when I have these drops after a surplus day that its actually fat I'm losing?

Well, I tend to align with Dr. Layne Norton's perspective, which is "fat" is not as static as we think especially when one is fairly lean. But, I'm also aware based on Layne Norton's information that unpacking a "fat cell" is actually a pretty involved process. And, the leaner one is, the harder the body will make it too unpack. Just ask any female or male IFBB pro cutting for a bodybuilding show.

So, maybe .1 or .3 lbs. of what I eat on a surplus day might actually be "fat". But, the majority is water and waste at the end of the day simply because the cals are being used on the bike or in the gym almost as quickly as they are stored as glycogen. The extra cals really don't even have time to be stored as "fat" for that long.

One other thing to keep in mind is that in order for me to actually gain a full pound of fat, I would have to ingest the calories I already burn in one day on top of 3500 cals. So, say I burn around 1500 cals on a recovery day. I would have to ingest 3500+1500 = 5000 calories in order to gain a full pound of fat. And, I gotta tell ya folks - I like food but that amount would not set well in my stomach AT ALL!

Think about how much I would have to eat on my cycling days to gain a pound. That would be 2800+3500 = 6300 cals. OH, HEYALL NO! My gastric juices bubble just envisioning that...

Do some professional and non-professional athletes track like I do? Some do and some don't. I personally feel if one is dialed in, they can only improve their performance both in the gym and during events like triathlon and century cycles. But, some athletes don't want to be bothered so the cals land where they land and if they're under-fueled or over-fueled then "oh well" they just deal with it. Which, is fine too. To each their own.

Anyway, I hope everyone is have a restful Sunday. I'm off to finish up the ricotta I started and clean my suite. It's a recovery day for me. Have a beautiful blessed day, everyone :-)
