dyerseve726's Journal, 13 November 2021

I think I might actually be gaining for reals now (good thing). I figured out what was wrong with me...serotonin syndrome. I was basically ODing on my own neurotransmitters. Prozac was the cause. It can be deadly and the symptoms are no joke. Rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, headaches, diarrhea, heavy sweating, dehydration, rigid muscles, muscle spasms, agitation, confusion, and chills. I had it all and really thought the end was near, lol. My last pill was 10 days ago and I've been steadily improving. Started tracking my calories again and able to put down around 2000 per day and actually digest it now that I'm not poisonings myself every morning 🤦‍♂️
112.4 lb Lost so far: 0.6 lb.    Still to go: 0 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Glad they figured that out. Coming off that stuff is tricky, too. I'm glad you're feeling better.

Liz-Andra - between the ER and primary care, I saw 3 different doctors and basically got zero answers from any of them. My primary doctor just wanted to put me on a different drug in the same class, but I was adamant that I be on nothing. I did my own research and connected the dots after a short walk nearly killed me (175+ BPM for 3+ minutes). The ER doctor encouraged me to get exercise and that prozac couldn't cause heart palpitations 🤦‍♂️ What sealed the deal for me is the fact that the body uses tryptophan to create serotonin. I documented right on here how sick I got after using this mass gainer product for a few days. I wasn't sure what was going on, but after making this discovery, I checked the label...high quantities of tryptophan. And the night before I went to the ER, I ate a big burger for the first time in a while and was up all night feeling sick. Beef has about as much tryptophan as turkey. It's sad that I had to be my own doctor.

Sorry you had that reaction. Was on it for quite awhile with no such effects. Was able to quit almost every med when I retired. Hope you can keep finding the right mix.

Maryjane - I certainly didn't mean to paint antidepressants, as a whole, in a bad light. By most accounts, my experience was unusual and serotonin toxicity is rare. The right medication for the right person can make a big difference, but I think it's very important to pay close attention to how you feel when starting something like this. Listen to your body and your instincts. Keep notes and bring them with you to the doctor if you don't feel right after starting them. You have to be your own advocate and not allow yourself to be pushed around if you feel like you're receiving advice or treatment that just feels wrong. My doctor was surprised when I said I didn't want to be on any other medication to replace the prozac, but ultimately respected my decision when I wouldn't budge.

Glad to hear that you are figuring things out and finding what works for you. As you get more comfortable with your diet, perhaps you'll be able to slowly up your daily calorie intake. 💜
