I thought it would be WAY different considering I haven't been tracking and weighing consistently.

Every time I think I've messed up, I immediately start researching more stringent weight loss methods, like intermittent fasting (which is incredibly difficult - I think I'm oversensitive to its effects or something). I jump on that bandwagon, and inevitably fail. Then I feel like a child. I scold myself, and start over on the original weight loss plan with renewed vigor.

Why do I think, every time, that the impulsive choice will actually work this time? Even as I type this, knowing my own patterns, I'm somehow not convinced that intermittent fasting won't be the magic key that produces results as fast as I would like to see.

Maybe it's one of those things I have to just get out of my system? I have to see for myself, one more time, that intermittent fasting just doesn't fit into my life the way I think it will.

What if I make *gasp* MODIFICATIONS to actually MAKE it doable for me? Like maybe, I only fast on weekdays? I mean, is it still fasting if I've messed with the system? No one gave me permission to take off on the weekends. I don't think Dr. Berg or Dr. Fung would approve. It's all or nothing, right?

Ok. So.

I'll try it this week. I'll start slow and work my way up, because I ALWAYS jump in feet first with the hard stuff. I guess I'm trying to get the hard part overwith. But not this time ... this time I'll start easy and go from there.

I wouldn't let Dr Berg or Dr Fung decide what is the right way to eat. I think the most important is to be healthy and find something that works for you. If that is mixing up different "ways" and methods so be it. Not always easy to find out what works. There is not magic way out there. So just be kind to yourself and accept your journey even if it is not perfect or always on the path.

There are a million diets out there. I don't do IF intentionally (before someone labeled it to turn a buck, it was simply "skipping a meal."), but if I'm not hungry yet, I don't eat just because the clock says it's time. Just listen to your body. I think the push for IF is mostly to steer people away from snacking all day & night. So if you're prone to munching in front of the TV, then just get rid of the garbage carbs lurking in your pantry (chips, granola bars, bagged popcorn, candy, etc.).

I love IF bc it fits around my schedule. It makes tracking cals easier and cuts out sneaky ones (from snacking or drinks). You can make your own schedule with what benefits you. It does get easier the longer it’s in your routine. It still requires cal counting of course but it’s helped me. Even healthy snacking can add up and wreck your week. I think that most people that stay with it long enough have personally tweaked it so just do you and what works. Good luck 👍

Hi Natalie, I can relate. Like you, I’m trying IF, due to life schedule, there’s days it doesn’t work for me. But at least I quit snacking, try to space out my meals and at least give myself 12 hrs of not eating. Remember to try to take the little wins along the way.

Finding a food plan is tricky and can be frustrating. Why don't you give yourself a timeline. At least 2 weeks. If you want to start with IF then do it for those 2 weeks and if you have a day where you " mess up" then start again. Just see what happens! You have to stick to your plan for more than a week. You can do this!! 👍

Fasting is just a tool to cut calories. Fung and Berg are just profiting from hypotheses and pseudoscience. At the end of the day, it's all about CICO. Use the tools that you can stick to, whether that is IF, low carb, low fat, etc.

Hi Natalie. As others have said there isn’t one way to go about this. If IF doesn’t feel right to you then certainly don’t follow it. I will say that for me it’s been amazing. I have found that I feel better on my fast days than on my non fast days. I love reading and following many peoples success stories and how many different approaches everyone has used. Just keep at it and if you don’t quit you will find what works for you and is sustainable.

If anyone wants a permanent solution come to Overeaters Anonymous...we have a fixed and define food plan, we do not eat flour and sugar and we weigh and measure the food...OA.org....if you want a permanent path to weight loss and staying thin for a life time I suggest your give it an honest 90 days...we are food addicts friends...the next fad is no answer for us...and OA is on line and free...I was sick and tired of being sick and tired...get off the dieting treadmill...become abstinent from compulsive eating...give it a shot..do not like us...we will refund your misery...just like AA...this works..and no you do not need to be religious...

Sounds like you’re struggling to find what works best for you. I know how difficult that can be. Whatever you decide, make sure it is something sustainable - something you can comfortably do for the rest of your life. May God give you wisdom as you weigh your choices.

Try not to be so hard on yourself. Unhealthy eating is a habit I acquired over the years because I didn't know any better. Now that I'm retired I did my own research to have a better understanding about my relationship with food and some of the addictive characteristics that goes along with what I eat or not. My lifestyle changes has been multifaceted, it's not all black and white. Even though everyone is different and at their own level I can relate to FS. Love yourself through it you're worth it and keep coming back 🤗🚣

Don’t focus on failure…you don’t have to be perfect to stay in energy balance. Alllllll you ever need to do in order to lose weight is be in a CALORIE DEFICIT!!!!! I tell my clients to treat their daily caloric intake like $$$$$ in their wallet (just don’t go over that number,Period). You can find some really funny info on this w/ a British PT, James Smith. He has great content/Podcast while kicking that same dead horse. Just don’t go over your set amount of calories, and you’ll get there!!! 😊🙌🏼

Good ideas! Learning about ourselves is the hardest part. And doing something positive with what we learn is the best!

Not everything works, for everyone. We are all different. Keep trying. You will eventually find what works gor you. I "fast" from 9pm to about 9am. I take one cheat day a week and I have started moving more. This seems to work for me. Also I am a junk food junkie, so the sodas are a must and the sugary ones, not diet. I've found away to make them work (one with each meal, more if I get the 7.5 oz ones). You must drink water. At least 16 ounces a day. Hope this helps you.
