Egull1's Journal, 05 July 2024

So, I ingested a whopping 3020 cals yesterday and it included and amazing Indian Food Feast! This is my Mother looking absolutely adorable in the pic. I only burned around 1600 cals because it was a recovery day so movement and activity were very minimal. So, I can attest this .8 lb increase is hands down the lowest fluctuation I've ever had after a surplus cal day. Normally, I will fluctuate at least be 1.5-1.8 lbs after a high cal day like this. I can also state I've completely lost my touch. Back when I was 112 lbs, I could take in up to 4800 cals on a surplus day. But, those days are GONE. Even at 3020 cals, I felt like a stuffed pork sausage and burned hyper-metabolic throughout the night, which of course included night sweats. A cups worth of basmati rice will do that to ya! LOL. We did make a nice little dent in my caloric bank account and I could tell this body needed the food. I have a long cardio session on the bike and I feel sure glycogen stores have been fully replenished. It will be a nice ride :-)
120.6 lb Lost so far: 89.4 lb.    Still to go: 0 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Same here. I use to fit in 6-7 plates at a buffet when I was in my 20s-30s. Now after 3 plates I’m like done

Hmmm, could I take down 3 plates at a buffet? You have to know I follow pro-eaters on youtube all the time, LOL! It definitely depends on what I might fill the plates up with. But, yeah the stomach bandwidth is just gone. At 50 the whole digestive system gets so dang sensitive. On the whole, technically I can eat up to 2500 cals/day. I wouldn't have much of a caloric bank account but I could do it and successfully maintain between 121-124 lbs. But, even at 2500 plus cals I start to get that heavy feeling that isn't really conducive to endurance training or weights. So, it's just easier to keep it between 2200-2400 per/day and throw the rest into savings for these kinds of surplus days. It comes in handy for holidays and birthdays. I will say this, since beginning body recomp back in 2017, this gals metabolism is pretty dang good at 50 years of age. I can still gain weight if I overeat consistently, but the random surplus days definitely throw my metabolism into high gear and even at this bf% - I don't burn as slow as I thought I would and I do attribute that to increased muscle mass. It's not a monumental metabolic boost, but it's enough to keep me relatively lean at this age and I'm humbly thankful for that.

wow, I consistently eat 1300 calories a day and can't seem to get below 180 pounds. What is your activity level like?

I too had a high calorie day yesterday! My husband asked me to please have Paula Deens with him as an anniversary gift...how could I not? I literally have not had fried foods like that in about 5-6 years! We ate fried chicken and carb and fat loaded veggies as well. I was expecting a 5 lb gain but actually only gained a bit over 2 lbs. I kind of enjoyed letting loose but for me I prefer to eat healthier foods. I'm glad you enjoyed your meal and hope your long haul COVID symptoms have been better!💜

@MarycileC…1300 calories daily might be the reason you CANNOT lose weight. Up your calories to 1700-1800 even 1900 is a calorie deficit.

@Diana - I'm glad you enjoyed! Yeah Indian food isn't really even considered a "splurge" food for me. Outside the Samosas and the spring rolls - Curry and rice are life to this Indian girl. I grew up on it and when we're motivated we will grind our own curry spices from scratch and make our own Naan. In fact, the next dish I am slated to make for the freezer is chicken breast with curry sauce, haha! This was just double the amount I usually eat along with some sweet Indian treats and appetizers. Indian food by and large is very healthy if it's fresh. The fattiest ingredient usually comes from the coconut milk, which is often used to create a creamy affect with some of the curries and can cut the spice a bit if it's a hot dish.

@MarycileC - My activity level that of a an off season athlete so yes, I'm always burning more than the average person. After coming off coming off a year of triathlons and cycling challenges in 2023, I really wanted to try and maintain at least 65-70% of my conditioning. Anyhow, a 75 minute cycling ride like the one I had last night ended me in a 2905 cal burn for the day. If you were ever wondering if Athletes eat back all their calories. Rest assured, they don't. It's near impossible especially if you're trying to maintain some conditioning. So, I just throw the excess in a little caloric bank account and use some of them for holidays and birthdays or just because :-) I was 43 when I started my weight loss journey and I'm around 5'2. When I hit the 180 mark - I was still burning around 1900 cals per/day outside strength and weights and I think my deficit cals were around 1700. I just made sure not to eat my exercise cals and I was still able to couch in 1 day of week where I ate at maintenance calories for whatever weight I was at. The only way 1300 cals would make sense is if I was completely sedentary. As in, the only movement I might make would be to go to the bathroom or the mailbox, or the fridge. Which, is fine if you are indeed living a very sedentary life style. But, rule of thumb on the whole is the larger you are the faster the metabolism actually is unless you have some underlying issue like under-active thyroid. Excess weight on an individual actually taxes the body's energy reserves to help other tissues and organs function so most folks with excess weight are burning more than someone at my size even if they are sedentary just so their bodies can maintain and function. This will change as you continue to lose. I ended my deficit around 1400 when I hit goal and I gotta tell you, 1400 was tough. So, glad I didn't start at such a low deficit. It served me and this metabolism well. Good Luck! Oh, and just so you are aware I'm in maintenance and have been since August of 2018 so I'm not in a "weight loss" mode and haven't been for a while.
