Cortisol, a stress hormone, increases cravings for carbohydrates and fats. I read that deep breathing can help decrease stress levels and can decrease some of the cravings. I pretty much got rid of my cravings by eating minimally and mindfully. However, I have not asked for a container to take home the other half of my restaurant meal. I usually feel so hungry in the restaurant that it must be the smell of the foods that encourages me. That or my thought that the food won't taste as fresh after being in the refrigerator until the next day. Rambling here because it's bedtime, but I am back at my goal weight. I hope to come back to FatSecret earlier tomorrow so that I can see your weigh ins and journals. Have a great Sunday!

The impact of cortisol is important. Great post, Deb. It stimulates fat and carbohydrate metabolism for fast energy, and stimulates insulin release and maintenance of blood sugar levels. it's the latter part that may cause appetite to increase. A study notes that high intensity training increases cortisol levels. I still do high intensity exercises as a stress reliever though. So - hopefully it counteracts against the cortisol created by stress. :)

Deb now that you have lost all the weight and your eyes are holding steady- I hope all your stress is gone away and under control. You are a gem!!!!
Its hard not to get hungry in a restaurant with all the good food, I try to keep my portions or types of food under control...If I know I am going to eat out, not to eat much during the day.

I have had to cut my meal sizes as well when I am out or i eat too much and have a belly ache. I know part of it is the smell and sight of food everywhere and the fact we rarely do eat out. But for example in the past two years I went from eating chips, cheese dip and a large plate filled with Spanish rice, refried beans and a chimichanga to only a chimichanga and some chips and cheese dip which I am sure cut out well over 500 calories in a meal. I had to realize I might be an adult, but I am built like a kid.
