I'm no expert but there is a theory that extreme deficits, which do result in faster weight loss, beyond a certain point are more difficult to maintain, because it's more likely to have a significant impact on your BMR and can put you in a situation where it's more likely you'll regain fat. A slow or moderate approach, if one isn't in a rush, is probably more likely to yield long-term sustainable results.
