jenkie5's Journal, 01 July 2012

Scoff at health nuts who tout buzz words and flaunt them like degrees after their names? Who, me? Well, maybe just a little. But, come on, macronutrients, oat bran, whole grain, organic produce, fiber, the infamous eight glasses of water, natural lemon cleansing drinks, and the golden ratio of balanced carbs and protein and fat? Oh, wait. The latter came from my doctor, who deservingly merits the M.D. and Ph.D. after her name. (Oh, and don't forget exercise.)

Yep, I capitulated and switched to organic, added fiber, try to eat natural foods, and became a card-carrying member of the can't leave the house without my water bottle club to go exercise. It seems to be working for me, and my preliminary lab work this week is much improved and prompted an atta-boy call from my doctor.

Oh, and guess what! I caught my hubby dipping into my cache of oat bran this morning, and he's as fit today as he was decades ago. (He claims a positive difference since its inclusion in his diet.)

Denial, selective hearing, and hardheadedness are patterns difficult to break. For me, this has to be the first step to a healthier future, and that's the ultimate goal rather than mere numbers of calories in my journal.

When my daughter called to ask how I'm doing, I said, "This week my BMI is no longer overweight! I'm normal!" I went on to tell her about my changes, the same ones she's been touting for years.

Uh-oh, the dreaded pregnant pause. Her struggle to not blurt out "I told you so" was palpable, although I do believe I perceived a whisper of a giggle. On the other hand, I suppose the initials after her name grant her the credentials and privilege to say "I told you so."

To everyone... here's to the start of a new month and good health!

Great work! I am gradually adding some of those things, but I am NOT a rules-follower, so trying not to overwhelm myself with them, just cutting bad things out, little by little.
