"Want some candy, little girl?" We were all warned about that; right? However, no one cautioned me concerning the perils of the big bad grocery store.

Since the first step on my quest for a healthier me (and hopefully fewer meds for my diabetes and symptoms the experts correlate with the disease), I ventured forth, as much as our Cro-Magnon forbearers must have, to forage for healthier produce. Not only am I deserving, but think of all the money saved from avoiding fast food places and walking past the bakery. Okay, so I take deep breaths and savor the fragrance as I pass by. (I've learned to empathize with the dog in the Beggin' Strip TV commercial chanting "Bacon! Bacon! Bacon!")

Enter (ta! da!) Whole Foods, the mecca of organic food, cage-free eggs, and profusion of healthy choices. With my basket filled to the brim with my mouth-watering array of everything organic on my list, I meandered through the aisles in search of other morsels.

Oh, look. There are samples of fruit over there... organic watermelon (oh, so sweet), organic cantaloupe (have to buy this), organic Ranier cherries (gasping at the price per pound). Around the corner lurked the cheese section. I never had smoked gouda. After all, how many calories can a tiny piece of wheat toast and a spoonful of cheese spread be, anyway? And on it went until...

...standing in line at the register, I realized I must have sampled my way through the store and negated all the calories expended from my walk. (Yep, I'm still walking. Yay, me.)

So beware the big bad grocery store; they may not be dressed in a black trench coat, but they can seduce us all the same.
