Hermiones Mom's Journal, 20 July 2017

I'm back and recovering from terrible errors in judgment while on vacation! Saturday night, I ate half an eclair...and then Sunday at brunch, I ate tastes of multiple desserts. I guess I figured once I'd eaten the eclair, I might as well go all in. Of course I was very sick by Sunday night, so I had to take Immodium for three days straight and be very very careful not to eat anything else likely to make me sick. I guess I needed to get a wonderful dessert out of my system! Today, I've managed to get along with just a Gas-X, so I'm thinking by tomorrow I'll be OK, so long as I don't do anything else really stupid. I have to admit though, that eclair was really, really good. For some reason, Baltimore is home to magnificent custard eclairs -- part of their Italian tradition, I guess. Overall, while I ate more than I normally would, other than Saturday dessert and Sunday dessert, I did pretty well. I was careful not to eat any bread or pasta, no cream sauces or fresh cheeses or anything thickened with regular flour. I stuck with seafood and salads. I carried my buckwheat crispbreads into restaurants so I wouldn't be tempted to eat bread, so it wasn't so bad. And I don't think I will be tempted to eat anything crazy for at least a few weeks! I am craving ice cream from watching everyone around me eat gelato for 5 days, so I think maybe I will try to to make some ice cream this coming week -- probably coffee. Now, I have to get back to my routine. No weigh in until August 1. I refuse to torture myself.

Okay, weird question, but you know how professional wine tasters don't swallow the wine and spit it out? Could you ever get any of your food/taste enjoyment from those devilish foods and spit them out so they don't make you so violently ill? It's a weird idea, but I hate to see you suffering so just to experience things you enjoy so much. Obviously, it wouldn't be a good technique in public..... and maybe it's not workable to just chew your food and spit it out in private either. I've never tried that.

kpwcalories -- thanks for caring so much that you made this suggestion. But honestly, I think that's not very workable and would be so unappealing as to make the whole experience a little disgusting. Better to be sick once every few months and remember the sensation of eating a really good eclair!

:) You're amazing. My mother really suffers in somewhat similar ways, and it's rough for her. I really feel for you. I love your spirit! And I hear you about eclairs!

kpwcalories -- thank you for your kindness. I think the part that occasionally makes me really upset is that I got this problem from contracting a food-borne infection from a quick-service restaurant that shall go nameless here. I had always been somewhat lactose intolerant, but now I have to be very careful not to accidentally eat anything made with milk or cream and then there are dozens of other things I can't eat anymore -- so I hesitate to accept invitations to dinner because I have to interrogate the hostess about what she's serving... It's a little embarrassing.

I love a good eclair. I haven't had one since a pastry food truck used to drive around in our old neighborhood selling them. They were incredible. I haven't found anything like them since. So I hear you, too.

Mom -- if you ever get to Baltimore, here's the place: https://vaccarospastry.com/ As you know, I've gotten to the point that I don't waste a day of illness on ordinary dessert. This place was incredible!
