After carb-ing up Saturday night in preps for a long run on Sunday morning... I had a failure to launch (I hit the snooze bar and went back to sleep). Did make it to church, then out to Mexican for lunch (more carbs), then home for a quick nap before what I hoped would be a late run at 7 PM. Unfortunately, my 20 year old son (and running partner while home from college) had friends over for even more carbs (pizza... I did not partake), I surmised that there would be no run... so I ate a honey sandwich (more carbs). An hour later my son announces "let's run!" Still feeling bloated from my sandwich, I grudgingly gear up and head out the door but announced "I'll be lucky to make 2 or 3 miles." 30 minutes in and my stomach bloat was gone, and I was making mental observations that my 6'-2", 190 lb athlete son has the same gait he had as a chubby 12 year old trying to run his first mile. I got lost in the run... sometimes we would run side by side, and others I would fall in behind him and try to match his faster pace. In the end, we had extended our run 3 times, finally finishing at 8 miles... did not see that coming when I left the house. Proof that running is a mental game as much as it is physical. STill, it was a good thing that I was carbed up!
