almost 9 months and I look at food completely different. I never looked at a meal thinking "Wow! that's at least 1000 calories". I pretended not counting calories didn't matter. I am taking the slow road, knowing my all or nothing attitude would sabotage staying on my road to health. Labels are tricky, I bought popcorn that said 130 calories but looking closer there were 2.5 servings a bag (over 300). I can't imagine how many calories are in the large popcorn with butter I ate at the movies. 2 pieces of kfc is over 700 calories (without sides or drink). Which is fine if you realize that it's at least half your daily calories if you have sides and a coke.

Good for you! Awareness is the beginning of everything.

Reading labels is a must. As you say, you buy some thing that says 50 Kcals, then you realise it's 50/100g and there is 350g in the package. I buy buns from my local baker. There are no Kcals on the label so they must be okay to eat!

I am so happy for you. WOW!!!! What a wonderful accomplishment!!!!! Now I know it is a hard road not to eat what you want. I was very thin my entire life.....Then I had open heart surgery, after that the pounds packed on. OH, what a change! I didn't think I would ever have a problem with being over weight. I went from size 8 to 18. I would just like to go down to a 14, because I think most American woman are that healthy size and weight. Well, enough about me, I am so pleased for you, and may you keep up the good work.

JockoT, that's just like my broken cookie theory. That truth works for me!

It's too bad they don't sell more "single serving" items so we didn't have to so many calculations -- and when they do, they want to charge twice the, price!! I find the best thing that works for me is to divide items into individual servings as soon as I get it home (whenever practical) -- that way I'm less tempted by the larger quantity (I recognize this doesn't work for things like popcorn at the movies.) You're doing well to recognize the different way of looking at food and changing your eating accordingly. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the support everyone! Yes pandasmom, I am lucky I live alone so I can buy single serving AND don't have to figure out how to afford buying food for an entire family. I buy ice cream that's 90-110 calories each so I can have treats (even though I still need discipline to log and not eat them all)

And that's why I don't eat too many foods out of a box, can, bag, restaurant or fast food place.
