blizz19's Journal, 24 October 2011

My lifestyle and work (primarily at a computer desk) has led me to gain weight, aided by the ease of eating out and/or frozen meals. Today (October 24, 2011), I am working towards losing 40 pounds to get in better shape. This will have professional benefits (at conferences, meetings, etc), social benefits (better looking and able to play sports better), and personal benefits (feel better, look better, fit into clothes better, more energy).

Hi Blizz! Hope you don't mind an intrusive comment - but I am wondering if your choices (more than lifestyle, work or ease of eating out) has led you to gain weight? I say this because in my case, it's definitely choice, although I sometimes blame other things or people (i.e. life transitions, stress, my partner, etc.) All those things do have an impact but at the end of the day, it comes down to what I choose to put into my mouth and what I choose to do with my body. Lots of things will happen that make it seem easier or preferable to make poor eating choices, but our lifestyle is what we make it. What do you think? Does that resonate with you?

Hi Bestlife -- Yes, that definitely resonates with me. I went from a pretty active lifestyle, to graduate school where I was in the office all day (and sometimes night), and only had to go a block to get to the University's food options. This provided the temptation to eat a lot of fast food because it was easy, close, and (in my mind at the time) a good idea since I could do it quickly and get right back to work. While this has made it easier to get out of shape quickly, I know that it is ultimately on me to watch what I am eating (I shouldn't sacrifice my body for work) and exercise daily (rather than in college, where exercise came naturally from various activities). It means that it's more "work" than before, but it's worth it!
