I am a very average or below average person when it comes to athletic ability. However, I’m very coordinated, so people often consider me to be “athletic” at first glance. But I’m not naturally strong, fast, or lean; I have asthma and allergies that make my cardio terrible even in the best of times; and I am (I believe) very slow to build muscle. For about 14 years now I have been active in trying to have a physique that I enjoy. Not for anyone else; it’s just so I can have some years of my life where my body looks the way I’d like it to. Through the years my idea of how I want to look has changed, so it’s a bit of a moving target, and it’s a never ending process. In some years I just wanted to be very light and lean, and I was, but I was not very strong. Some years I kinda stopped caring as much and trying as hard. Some years I got obsessed with sports that gave me a physique specific to that sport. But now that I’ve been working on strength and building muscle consistently for two years I’m starting to see something new that I never did before. It feels like it takes soooo long, I guess it does, I just didn’t stop being obsessed in this focus. I’m not going to bother with pictures because I just can’t do the changes any justice with a camera no matter how hard I try. But I can see particularly in my back and arms that I have gotten so much stronger. Instead of a person with bigger legs and a tiny torso and arms, I look a little more balanced between top and bottom and overall generally more athletic and strong. And I was able to do 5 pull ups recently! A lifetime record for me. I still want to lose a couple more pounds of fat if I can, like I said it’s a never ending process and I’m always learning new things.

Oh my God if I could write anything on here, that’s exactly what I would write. This is my story exactly. I too have asthma and you’re absolutely right about weight training training. If anybody cannot do cardio I find that it helps me to do short periods of cardio and more strength training that’s when I was fit, you just reminded me that I need to get back to do exactly what you’re doing. Congratulations for your success. Keep up the good work.👏👏👏

Nice observations. Very interesting to read and relatable.

@ocean girl yeah when the allergies/asthma gets really tough I try to do cardio indoors with an air purifier running next to me and the AC on. It helps to go lower intensity, you don’t pay for it quite as badly. I can do an hour on the rowing machine like that. But if I do outdoor stuff I often pay the price with bad breathing for the next couple days. This summer unfortunately I’m in a new place and it feels like every couple weeks a different kind of plant is suddenly trying to kill me. I’m eating local honey and I’m on a cocktail of allergy meds, best I can do for now.
