Tried something different today and stuck a couple of 8-pound weights in a backpack to carry on my walk. Absolutely kicked my butt. Makes me wonder how I ever backpacked in the desert carrying 3 gallons of water in my youth. Didn't make it quite 2 miles, but I was able to maintain a pace just under 20 minutes/mile. Made it a more intense workout with the added benefit of weight-bearing stress on the bones. Interestingly enough, this is about the amount of the loss I've maintained since I started seriously trying to get my weight down and keep it there in the past 3 or 4 years. It's dawning on me only now in my mid-50s that I really need to do everything I can to build muscle and maintain bone. Can't undo the past but can do better moving into the future. On Saturday a former coworker who is a total gym rat is coming over to help me develop a strength building routine I can do at home. Should be fun. Really nice woman.

It really is, Morticia! She could easily get certified as a personal trainer if she wanted to. We used to talk health/fitness on breaks at the office, and she's offered to help me before

Good choice. I looked at weighted vests at one point, it was something like $50. I did the same thing except carried water bottles which we drank.

I might try something like that - I used to backpack too

I've heard of the weighted vests, Katsolo. Like you, I'd rather save the $50. elizabeth -- I definitely learned that 16 pounds was a bit ambitious to start with. I'm going to try it again with 10 and work my way up.
