Happy Hump Day FS Peeps!
I'm still not weighing because I'm still on a medically advised diet. I'm now able to add fiber to my diet - YAY! My reason for eating in the world, I love fresh fruits and veggies. Sunday I made some delish strawberry rhubarb compote, so that was a nice addition to my cream of wheat today.

So, question for you all. I need to get a certain amount of fiber/nutrients. Do you ever 'eat because you have to' vs. because you want to? I'm really not hungry right now but I need to add some necessary dietary options. I think this might be good maybe and keep me from getting hungry later? it just seems weird to eat when I'm not hungry!

I have to eat because I have hypoglycemia. I have a narrow window and have to eat within a half hour of set times.

I do, actually, sometimes. I wasn't terribly hungry last night, but made dinner anyway because there were some things I wanted to get in. I have found that if I don't eat enough calories, even if I'm not in the mood for them at the time, that the hunger rebound isn't good. It's a caloric balance -- being sure to nourish yourself enough as well as not too much.

I'm often not hungry when I eat. I eat breakfast & dinner around the same time each day....hungry or not. The thing is, I would start to feel hungry if I skipped my meal. It would be less convenient to eat at that point in time. If I eat on a schedule, it prevents feeling hungry & eating snacks that I shouldn't.

I struggle to get in enough dietary fiber and protein, so I do sometimes have a little something that has those macros, and I am the same way, if I get hungry later its always at an inconvenient or hurried time so what I might grab in the moment isnt always a good choice. Also Ive noticed if my caloric intake is too consistently low I dont lose then either, so try to mix it up a bit. Strawberry rhubarb compote - YUM.

Yes, sometimes I eat when I'm not all that hungry so I can reach my dietary goals, usually a 200 or 300 calorie meal, which doesn't solve the problem but it helps. I have to take supplements for what I am deficient in based on what my labs show. I'm usually good on fiber b/c I eat fruit or veggies with every meal and snack.

What is a good amount of fiber per day?

woofwaggers -- the recommendation is 25-35 grams, but the U.S. average is something like 15. Not hard to get 25 with whole plant foods in your diet, but exceedingly difficult on SAD. I shoot for 30 at the bare minimum, but more typically am in 40-60 range

How d I you get that much fiber Writing?! I average 20 g a day & I eat lots of fruit & veggies. I find it difficult to get more.

I average 43 grams a day with a target of 40. The way you get more fiber in the diet is to choose veggie, fruit and grains that are high in fiber. You can eat the recommended 5-6 servings a day and still come up short on fiber if you aren’t choosing high fiber content and just looking at the caloric amount.

Sherry, that is my situation too. I Rarely reach 30 gms and often struggle to get over 20. If I dont eat all-bran every day I really dont get much in, and I eat lots of fresh fruit/veggies.

Sherry -- I eat a lot of legumes, whole grains, and seeds. I have some go-tos when I want to bump it up, mostly chia seeds, blackberries, and shredded wheat with bran cereal. I don't eat meat and don't eat all that much egg and dairy. I try to hit the targets in the Dr. Greger's Daily Dozen app, but since I'm not strictly WFPB, I don't often check all 24 boxes. I don't limit carbs, which makes it a little easier for me. Not sure, but I think on the desktop, but not the app, that you can look up my food diary and see. Yesterday was a little light for me because I went out to lunch. If you look at it, know that the sourdough bread you'll see (a lot of) is my husband's homemade, and it's mostly whole grain

Wow, thanks for all of your input. I'm glad I'm not the only one. It does feel weird to eat when I'm not hungry! @outerlimit @Sherry @windyday, I'm with you. I think also if you are eating a low calorie diet, it's even more difficult (I'll try a loss with 1200 calories). I'm looking forward to being able to eat ALL fruits and veggies, just will take more time. On a 'low residue' diet (and phasing into fiber), it's been difficult to get the fiber in. I tried on Sat., had a drink with fiber after supper, and the resulting digestive distress was not pleasant :-( But even not on this LR diet, and eating a ton of fruit and veg, I've still come up short and really have to focus on it. @writingwyo, I'm glad to hear you also add in what you need. I 'wish' I could have beans/legumes right now, but because of the skins/gas factor, it'll be one of the last fibers I'll be able to add in. I too, eat little meat, at least of the red variety. I'm a fellow bread maker like your hubby, my daily is a sour dough fake (I've killed so many starters just going on vacation)! But, it's a good fake and a nice fermented dough (just a quick ferment w/beer). I have some on the rise now.

@morticia, I feel you on the blood sugar thing. I'm not diagnosed, but if my drops (which it sometimes does like a rocket), it's not good for me or anyone in proximity!
