I have never done it but my dad did. Very gross but not much we can do. They need us.

Another of Nature's Miracles! Animal moms are amazing, knowing exactly what to do. Hope all is ok with both of them. 🐃

Why on this Earth do people think birthing fluid is gross. Everyone thinks life is a miracle but then say how yucky live births are. Hypocrisy has no end.

JSGY1710 because birthing fluid IS gross. The miracle is not in the nastiness of the fluid but the sweetness of life. How is that hypocrisy?

A good day when both are right side up. Some surprises are just a little bit more surprising than others.
Name for baby? How about Cupid or Aprodite

The yuck wasn’t birthing fluid. So I had to pull the calf out of the momma, the hips stuck a bit, and when he finally came out, so did much of the insides of the cow. (Tame graphic description ahead, skip if you need to). The yuck was the insides of the cows all over me, along with blood. The birthing fluid was pretty tame. I’m just glad I had the presence of mind to remove jacket and shirt before hand.
The vet managed to get everything back inside and cow sown up. It looked as if calf was nursing, but will see tomorrow if I am taking another animal to the bone yard.

Oh my that scared me at first. Congrats on the new calf.

DaddyM, your story about the yuck was just like one of my favorite parts of a James Herriot book. He is a Scottish vet and was discussing the striking disconnect between a school's teaching of veterinary practice and the very cold, 3am, yuck-reality of veterinary practice. At the end of the day, he (and too, it seems) determined that watching life enter the world was always beautiful. All things bright and beautiful all creatures great and small.💙
