Punkmime's Journal, 20 September 2015

I am hoping to keep my journal updated from here on out, so here is my story:

I was always heavy. Eventually, I got VERY heavy. I weighed over 330 lbs. On July 1, 2010, I had Roux en Y Gastric Bypass. I was vary careful with my diet and exercise and dropped a ton of weight. Well, a tenth of a ton, anyway. My lowest was 111 (too thin) and I stabilized around 128-132 (a size 4/6). I am 5'4" tall. I thought that I had put all of that behind me, but then came the hysterectomy. I had developed 10 pounds of uterine fibroids that caused me to have VERY heavy and painful menstruation. I became anemic to the point of needing 4 blood transfusions and several iron infusions. The decision was made to remove my uterus and the tubes. I was allowed to keep my ovaries, which was supposed to keep my natural hormone cycle going and avoid a forced menopause. The doctor even joked that it would be like weight loss surgery all over again as they were removing a fairly significant amount of weight from my midsection. Wrong.
I immediately gained roughly 20 pounds. We assumed that it was swelling and water retention from surgery. I resumed activity the first moment I could. I still couldn't get into my pants, but I was told that since it was an open surgery that it might take 6 weeks to get back to normal.
I continued to gain between three and five pounds per week despite a significant cut in Calories. By June, I was up to a size 12 and had surpassed my pre-surgery level of exercise.
I have been seriously struggling to keep myself under 180. Despite eating a healthy, fresh diet, cutting carbs, keeping the calorie count down and working harder than ever before in my life I seem to hover right around 178. I bought a bike and started biking daily (between 2 and 14 miles a day). I lift weights. I have even started running. Ugh. Running. I hate running. I did track in school, and then smoked for 24 years. I haven't had a cigarette in years, but as soon as I started running again, it was like I had just smoked a pack. My lungs have yet to forgive me for the massive amount of damage I have inflicted on them.
The running is recent and only added out of desperation. I also have a set of 10 pound ankle weights I wear when walking my dog. I have a three story house and so climbing stairs is a way of life for me. You get the idea.
Yesterday, I picked up the NutriSystem Diabetic starter pack from Walmart (I am not diabetic, but don't handle sugar very well since my gastric bypass). I am a full time college student and I am hoping that this will simplify my eating. WebMD gave it good reviews and I have read a lot of positives about the program. The cost isn't actually that bad. It is like $315 for a four week supply of food. I spend more than that on my low cal/low carb/organic/fresh grocieries by far. I realize that NutriSystem is NOT organic or anything, but my point is simply that it is not cost prohibitive. I started that program yesterday. If this post weren't so long, I would give a brief review of the food. I may do that at a later time.
Okay, that brings us to today. It could be any number of the things I have mentioned, but for the first time in what seems like forever, I showed a small bit of progress!! I constantly yo-yo between 180 and 176, but today was the first time in ages that I dropped below that 176 mark! I don't want to get my hopes up TOO high. It may be that I am more dehydrated than usual this morning. But, maybe... just MAYBE, something I have done finally made a tiny difference. Only time will tell.
