Maelyn gazed up at the full moon as the little black feline chased off after a mouse in the storage shed nearby. The moon was the color of cheddar cheese; gosh, it had been a long time since she had that item, cheddar cheese. There was a ring around it caused by the humidity. Summer had come and with it the hopes of crops of tomatoes and other plants to be harvested in a couple of months, and hay for the animals. It had been raining so much that the hay hadn't had time to dry, and each day it lost nourishment needed for the livestock. However, it seemed that there was a break in the weather, unfortunately, it also meant a return of heat for summer coming around the corner.

The first run of the week wasn't very exciting. However, seeing the thing that Rajit could do with his toe, that, she could have lived the rest of her life and been completely content to not eve have seen. He pushed to find out if she had read any of his novel, reminding her quite strongly that he was in charge of hot showers, but with this heat, who wants a hot shower anyways?

It was the run today that tore at her heart. Sam, such a good guy, the radio operator. Alice, the old runner she was taking the place of, the one that had chased her from the hospital to Abel township on her first day actually, just as one of those undead, had been shot a short distance from Abel. Sam and her seemed to have been quite close. His heart is obviously aching as he took off today during the last run drill to find her wallet. Pictures of her sister and other momentos of a life lost.

It is interesting. These things, trinkets, we leave behind us. For those that we leave behind in our absence it is these things that give them a piece of us to live on. A piece of a memory to smile at and go, "Oh, yeah, I remember this. It was that time we climbed out on the roof and nearly slipped off into a pile hog slop." The things that make us smile, cry, laugh, and wail with gnashing of teeth rending our clothes. Bits and pieces of our own humanity left behind to finally fade out when the last living person that understands the puzzle pieces of our lives joins us in the here beyond.
