Crap bike journal

I stayed at my friend’s house in Petersburg VA last week. “There’s a voodoo woman next door and she nosy as hell,” she warned me. I never saw the said priestess but I did meet the nosy pit bull behind her rotted fence. “Voodoo Chile,” I thought. It was a rough neighborhood and I managed to get my bike pump stolen. I was also without my helmet and water bottle because I forgot to bring them. Didn’t bother with breakfast either. I decided that the deficiency suited me well. The modern luxuries always make me feel somewhat discomfited on the Civil War trails anyway.

The battlefield elicits my tendency to disarrange contexts. The swish-swish-swish of the pedal strokes betray the contemporary decadence, echoing incongruously between the haunting trees that witnessed the Siege. Pines drop their skinny branches that get caught in my bike wheels then go click-click-click to mock me and threaten to destroy a few spokes, forcing the wheels to slide to a hard stop, subjecting my overequipped, overprotected, overnourished existence to the critical eyes of the famished Confederates crawling out of the trenches to seek answers, risking life and limb to seek the honey from a flower named Blue.

Siege of Petersburg (June 1864 - March 1865)
“A careful study of the 44th Virginia Infantry Regiment revealed a shockingly high desertion rate of nearly 30 percent”

John, sir, yes I am actually considering Richmond/Petersburg area as my next contract job assignment. And I will bring my bicycle. Please wave if you spot me on the Civil War trail!

Pinay, girl yo mama jokes are classic and forever! I love them. Tell me one of yours, I need to be entertained during the gruesome 14 hr flight😭 How are you sister? I’m very sorry about your hip problem. Do you wear dansko clogs? Dansko is no good, very bad for hips! No one believes me.

Matt😂 I checked her out, she seems like a badass👍🏼 You can call me Tokio while I’m in Japan. By the way, weren’t you planning to go to Japan this year?

YFritz, Not sure yet! I may transit at Narita airport. Tokio and sushi ~ love ‘em 😁

Matt - the question is, will Tokio happen before the upcoming fence repair?🤔 I do remember your posting a pic from Southeast Asia. You’ve been an enigma to me since.

YF, I’m looking forward to hearing about your Tokio trip. Let me know if you see agonies!😆 As for my trip, it’ll be a quick trip Jan 13-16 to start the house hunting process. I can’t believe it is already here. Hopefully I’ll be able to connect with friends and not only roam through homes and sit in a hotel room. Ha ha ha. Maybe I’ll TP colleagues homes🤪😝 See, a much more light weight trip compared to you. Oh, I did forget about a trip with my daughters class to Boston and DC in Mar. more as that gets closer!

Hi Yfritz, lol 😁 Tokyo is not for this year unfortunately. I’m debating whether to go to Tokyo or Istanbul. No firm plan until early next year. You enjoy your trip ⛩️

There are places where you can feel the sad, restless spirits lingering.

TJ, house hunting is fun fun fun. Enjoy! And did you say you’re going to be in DC in March? I live only 10 miles from DC, if you spot a crazy chinagal in a Subaru, that would be me! Don’t forget to dap me up buddy. And maybe check out some jazz venues? DC over the years lost its pulse, but jazz scenes are still pretty decent. Some areas are very very rough, so please be careful. Is this a trip for your daughter’s swim meet? Are you visiting Mt Vernon (practically my backyard)? Lincoln Memorial?🏛️

Matt. Definitely, definitely Istanbul. No question. Hagia Sophia. Bazaar. Rugs. Oushak rugs. Anatolian rugs. Kilims. Buy me some kilim rugs. Crazy about Turkey🇹🇷 Oh, Google says there are some fantastic golf courses in Istanbul🏌️‍♂️ You’re welcome👍🏼

Trip to the east coast is with my daughters 8th grade. Visiting Plymouth 🪨 and other locations. I haven’t memorized the itinerary yet, but imagine Mt. Vernon is on the list. I love DC. The history is amazing, the monuments large and small. I look forward to seeing the WWII memorial as it was built post 2000, but love the Korean War memorial. I find it very moving. My guilty pleasure moniker is for Einstein. Have you seen it? But first, we have your trip! 😉😁

Plymouth looks amazing too, I’ve never been there. Are you visiting the East coast as a school chaperone? I always appreciated parents who are willing to do that. It’s wonderful to see that you are very much involved in your daughter’s life. She adores you, I loved the picture of you and her together. No I haven’t seen Einstein… I’ll check it out once I return. Why is it a guilty pleasure?
