Ok girls, I have a serious question... is there any truth to losing weight during your "monthly time"? I usually gain weight or at least retain water, but I'm usually busy giving into my cravings. I wonder if anybody has also heard about women burning more calories during that time, and if there's any truth to it? Is there anything anyone does to modify their diet, besides just staying healthy and on track? Might seem naive, but I'm just trying to learn as much as I can to complete my new lifestyle. I've been losing steadily and don't want to mess it up! :) Thanks for any advice!

I absolutely gain during that time. I tend to retain water normally so I am Worse that time of the month. If u feel it might hurt ur motivation totally skip that weeks weigh in. If not use it to help track lol.

Women do burn more calories due to cellular activity taking place internally. Some female metabolisms may see an increase up to 15% due to hormonal changes and loss of blood. The increase in metabolism can lead to an increase in appetite which may be the cause of cravings and why we tend to eat more. But many people gain weight from bloat even when they stick to plan. It is an individual thing.

I was aware of water retention and a propensity to eat more during that time. I suppose either of those would cause a gain. As for being hormonally predisposed to it... I'm on the 39th day of my period. It would explain a great deal about why I'm so slow to lose right now.

I retain water, and will see a gain. I tend not to even look at the scale until I am back to normal. I do try to avoid salt/sodium because that will encourage more water retention, and I tend to work it into my diet based on what I am craving. At least try for a healthier version of what I am craving. Last time was nachos, so I made 10 mini tostito chips with chicken, low fat mozzarella cheese, salsa, chopped green onions, and baked it in the oven. Then topped it with 1 tsp of low fat sour cream. MMM so good. And it did not destroy my day. Sodium not so hot in the tostitos but it was better than raiding the fridge. If I have give in to my cravings, I really aim for choosing the best option. I slipped this weekend...but am going to be more conscious of what I consume. Have a great week.

All these things give me good perspective and good information. I'll just try to watch the sodium and remind myself throughout the week that the cravings won't kill me, or try small healthy portions instead. After all, if my metabolism is being revved up, maybe I can actually manage weight loss during this time?! :)
