Due to hubby having been in icu for a week, and home ill the week prior & recuperating this past week, we made the decision to visit a food bank today for the first time ever (we are both in our late 40s).

We received a big brown paper bag full of stale gas station donuts. 5, yes FIVE tied off shopping bags full of gas station hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, breakfast burritos & chicken nuggets that all were dated consume by May 9. (Not that he could eat this if they were not expired, as he just returned from ICU & is on a restricted sodium diet). A bag of frozen fish sticks dated use by January 23, 2022, two loaves of bread dated May 3. Two pre made Cesar salad bowls with white bacon and gray chicken (meaning it sat out & spoiled). Frozen milk dated May 5 (when was it frozen?).

There was 10 cans of soups, beans or fruit. All salty and not safe for him to eat.

What can he eat? One bag of pinto beans & a large bag of unsalted pistachios and what I think is several pounds of local grown potatoes. A big brick of cheddar cheese that I need to portion into 32 servings to control salt.

I’m not trying to appear ungrateful. & I know food banks are not designed as support for critically ill people. But there will be families showing up today receiving similar food stuffs (I assume we weren’t given all the expired gas station food). Families with children. Parents will have to decide if it’s safe to feed their kids salty, greasy expired gas station food.

Maybe I’m being a snob. & I’m not saying anyone owes me anything. But I would not pay for five day old fast food because I know it’s going to make me sick. I’m not willing to chance eating it now that I’m in a bind, certainly not able to feed it to my husband who has systolic heart failure.

Again, I’m not angry for myself, I’m not out anything but a few dollars in gas. I’ll figure out how to get by for the next month. I’m not angry at the food bank for only being able to give what they get. I’m sad for those families with children that will go home to find five bags of expired gas station burgers and about 10 pounds of stale donuts.

This puts things into perspective as to what I need to do to help others once were in a stable place & he’s better.

im genuinely sorry that you are going through this right now. I pray for your situation to get better and as you said hope others are not receiving this out of date food. You are not "ungrateful". It's unacceptable even at a food bank to give out expired, and stale and NOT SAFE to eat food. Keep staying strong you'll get through this <3
